This delightful pastry combines buttery, flaky puff pastry with a sweetened cream cheese filling and fresh strawberries. Topped with a hint of strawberry jam or a vanilla glaze, it makes for a perfect breakfast or dessert treat.
For the Strawberry Filling:
4 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
For the Cream Cheese Filling:
8 oz (226 g) cream cheese, room temperature
½ cup (60 g) powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Danish Pastry:
2 sheets puff pastry, thawed
1 large egg, lightly beaten with 1 teaspoon water
2–3 tablespoons sugar (for topping, optional)
Optional Toppings:
¼ cup (60 ml) strawberry jam
1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
2–3 tablespoons (30–45 ml) milk
Prepare the Strawberry Filling:
In a mixing bowl, combine sliced strawberries, sugar, and cornstarch.
Allow the mixture to sit at room temperature for 15 minutes to macerate.
Make the Cream Cheese Filling:
In another bowl, beat the room-temperature cream cheese until smooth.
Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
Prepare the Puff Pastry:
Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
Unfold one sheet of puff pastry and cut along the folded lines to form six smaller rectangles.
Score a border about ¼ inch from the edges of each rectangle using a small knife.
Assemble the Danishes:
Place about 1 tablespoon of cream cheese filling into the center of each puff pastry rectangle, staying within the scored border.
Top with 2–3 slices of the macerated strawberries.
Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the beaten egg mixture.
Sprinkle the tops with sugar if desired.
Bake:
Transfer the assembled pastries to the prepared baking sheets.
Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden brown and puffed.
Optional Toppings:
While the danishes are baking, prepare the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk until smooth.
Alternatively, warm the strawberry jam and brush it over the baked danishes for a glossy finish.
Serve:
Allow the danishes to cool slightly before drizzling with the glaze or brushing with strawberry jam.
Serve warm and enjoy!
