With a crisp top layer and a molten, chocolatey center, it’s a crowd-pleasing treat that’s surprisingly easy to make. Whether you're hosting a party or satisfying a sweet craving, this cake delivers decadent flavor with minimal effort.
For the Cake Layer:
1 box (15.25 oz) chocolate cake mix
1 large egg
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
For the Gooey Filling:
8 oz cream cheese, softened
2 large eggs
1 cup powdered sugar
¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
Prepare the Oven and Pan:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
Make the Cake Layer:
In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, 1 egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
Stir until well blended.
Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.
Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
Prepare the Gooey Filling:
In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth.
Add the remaining 2 eggs, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt.
Mix until fully combined.
Slowly add the melted butter and continue mixing until smooth.
Assemble and Bake:
Pour the cream cheese mixture over the cake layer in the pan.
Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until the center is slightly set and a toothpick inserted comes out mostly clean.
Be careful not to overbake; the center should remain gooey.
Cool and Serve:
Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.
Once cooled, cut into squares and serve.
