Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie
Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pie is a timeless dessert that brings comfort and nostalgia with every bite. This classic pie features a rich and creamy chocolate filling encased in a buttery, flaky crust. It’s a perfect treat for family gatherings, holidays, or any special occasion. The simple yet indulgent filling, made from cocoa and eggs, is topped with a dollop of whipped cream for added richness.
Ingredients:
For the Pie Crust:
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into pieces
3-4 tablespoons ice water
For the Chocolate Filling:
1 1/2 cups whole milk
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 large egg yolks, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the Whipped Cream (optional):
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Prepare the Pie Crust:
In a food processor, combine flour and salt. Add the cold butter and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add ice water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Trim any excess dough, and use a fork to prick the bottom of the crust. Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden and crisp. Set aside to cool.
Make the Chocolate Filling:
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, whisking frequently.
In a separate bowl, combine the egg yolks and cornstarch. Gradually whisk in some of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture to temper it. Slowly pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture.
Continue to cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the filling thickens (about 5-7 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until smooth.
Assemble the Pie:
Pour the chocolate filling into the baked pie crust. Smooth the top with a spatula and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or until fully set.
Make the Whipped Cream (optional):
In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Top the pie with whipped cream before serving, or serve it on the side.
Serve:
Slice the chilled pie and serve with a generous dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy this classic dessert!
