In de Alpen kom je op droge, rotsachtige plaatsen regelmatig verschillende Sempervivumsoorten tegen. Vetplantjes in rosetvorm die zich verstoppen tussen de keien. Het spinnenwebhuislook heeft karmijnrode bloemen en de bloeitijd is van ca. juni tot en met juli. De bladeren zijn grijsgroen met fijne draden (spinnenweb) tussen de punten van de blaadjes. De hoogte van deze vaste plant is ca. 10 cm. Verdraagt een temperatuur tot -25 graden C. en blijft de gehele winter groen.
Deze vetplant is zeer geschikt voor de rotstuin als 'voegenvuller' in de stapelmuur of tussen stenen (ook bestrating). Verlangt een zonnige plek en een matig voedselrijke bodem. Ze groeit vrij snel en heeft meestal een kussenvormige groeiwijze. Deze plant staat het liefst op een licht vochtige plek, maar kan redelijk tegen droogte.Je kunt ze goed uitplanten. Woekert niet of nauwelijks en laat zich goed combineren met andere planten.
Bij succulenten (vetplanten) is het belangrijk dat de groei niet te veel gestimuleerd wordt omdat de plant dan niet meer rechtop groeit en kan omvallen. Met andere woorden de celwanden moeten stevig zijn waarvoor kalium nodig is. De waterhuishouding bij succulenten is op een ingenieuze manier geregeld. Dit is nog een reden om een hogere kalium dan stikstofgift te geven aangezien kalium een efficiënte waterhuishouding stimuleert.
De blaadjes van deze sempervivumsoorten kunnen gekneusd op de huid gebruikt worden tegen jeuk, irritatie, roodheid en schaafwonden. Het zijn vooral de blaadjes van Sempervivum tectorum die medicinaal gebruikt worden.
Houseleek leaves and their juice are used for their cooling and astringent effect, being applied externally to soothe many skin conditions. As with many other remedies that are both astringent and soothing, houseleek simultaneously tightens and softens the skin. The fresh leaves are astringent, diuretic, odontalgic, refrigerant and vulnerary. They are used as a poultice in much the same way as Aloe vera in the treatment of a wide range of skin diseases, burns, scalds, bites and stings etc and have also been used to get rid of warts and corns. The plant is also sometimes used internally in the treatment of shingles, skin complaints and haemorrhoids, though some care is required since in excess the plant is emetic and purgative[. The leaves are harvested as required and used fresh.

Französisch: Grande joubarbe, artichaut sauvage; englisch: Barren privet; italienisch: Barba di Giove, carcioffi grassi; dänisch: Huslög; norwegisch: Taklök; polnisch: Rojnik; russisch: Skoczek; schwedisch: Taklök; tschechisch: Netřesk zední; ungarisch: Körozsa.
Namensursprung: Sempervivum, zusammengesetzt aus dem lateinischen semper = immer und vivum vom lateinischen vivere = leben, weist darauf hin, daß die Pflanze auch auf dem trockensten Boden zu gedeihen vermag; tectorum vom lateinischen tectum = Dach in bezug auf die schon bei den Römern übliche Sitte, die Hauswurz auf den Dächern zu kultivieren, ein Gebrauch, der im Mittelalter fortgesetzt wurde, weil man glaubte, daß die Pflanze das Einschlagen des Blitzes abwenden, also als eine Art Blitzschutz dienen könnte.
Volkstümliche Bezeichnungen: Huslôk, "Lauch" nach den fettigen Blättern, Huslôf (niederdeutsch), Hausampfer, -rampfer (Oberösterreich), Hausampfer (Niederösterreich), Dachwurzel (mundartlich im Alemannischen und in Thüringen). Chemmirosa, auf den Kamindeckel gepflanzt (St. Gallen), Donnerkrut, -look (niederdeutsch), Ton(d)erbart (Aargau), Dunerknöpf (Niederösterreich, Tirol), Dimerkraut, Dimer = Gewitter (Bidgau in der Eifel). Wie die Sedum-Arten, so wird auch unsere Art gegen den "Zitterach" = trockene Hautabschilferung verwendet, daher in Niederösterreich Zidriwurz'n. Entstellungen aus "sempervivum" sind Sempelfi (Lübeck), Zimpelfi (Westpreußen) In Kärnten ist die Hauswurz schließlich der (wilde, deutsche) Rhabarber.
Botanisches: Das ausdauernde Dickblattgewächs ist in den südeuropäischen Gebirgen beheimatet. Seine aus keilförmigem Grunde verkehrt eiförmigen Blätter sind zu einer mittelgroßen, grundständigen Rosette vereinigt, aus deren Mitte der 10 bis 60 cm hohe mit eiförmigen fein zugespitzten Blättern besetzte Blütensproß hervorgeht. Der reichverzweigte endständige Blütenstand besteht aus sternförmigen, blaßrosenroten Blüten. Blütezeit: Juli bis August.
- Der blühreife Zustand von Sempervivum tectorum wird durch eine erhöhte Kohlenstoffassimilation bei lebhafter Transpiration und relativer Einschränkung der Nährsalzaufnahme erreicht. Bei erhöhter Temperatur, bei Wasser- und Nährsalzzufuhr wird jedoch die Blühreife vernichtet, oder die Pflanze entwurzelt sich mit Hilfe ihrer Rosettenblätter selbst, um auf diese Weise die Nahrungszufuhr zu unterbinden (der letztere Fall ergab sich bei den Versuchen im eigenen Laboratorium).
- Die dicken fleischigen Laubblätter erwärmen sich an der Sonne verhältnismäßig stark. So konnte Askenacy bei einer Außentemperatur von 28° C bei Sempervivum-Individuen 52° C feststellen. Drude maß an einem einzelnen Blatt von Sempervivum tectorum 50° C und eine Stunde später im Inneren der Rosette 42° C. Auch die in eigenen Kulturen ausgeführten Temperaturmessungen ergaben, daß Sempervivum tectorum von allen Pflanzen die höchsten Temperaturen zeigte. Gemessen wurde sowohl die Oberfläche (Epidermis) als auch die Temperatur unter der Epidermis (Jahrbuch Dr. Madaus 1934, S. 54.). An blühenden und nicht blühenden Pflanzen wurde der Temperaturanstieg und -abfall eines ganzen Tages bei bedecktem und nicht bedecktem Himmel gemessen, vgl. die untenstehende Kurve.
Geschichtliches und Allgemeines:
In der griechischen und römischen Arzneikunde fanden mehrere Arten von Sempervivum, darunter wohl hauptsächlich Sempervivum arboreum L., Verwendung. Dioskurides rühmt die kühlende, adstringierende Wirkung der Pflanze bei Geschwüren, Augenentzündungen, Brandwunden und Podagra. Getrunken sei der Saft ein gutes Mittel gegen Schlangenbiß, Bauchfluß, Dysenterie und Würmer. Caelius Aurelianus benützte den Saft in Klistieren bei Durchfällen, die Pflanze als Umschlag bei Blutungen. Die alten Griechen nennen sie Aeizoon, während sich schon bei Plinius die Bezeichnung Sempervivum findet. Wie immer halten sich die Autoren der mittelalterlichen Kräuterbücher an die Angaben ihrer klassischen Vorbilder und empfehlen die Hauswurz dementsprechend.
In manchen Gegenden werden die jungen Sprossen und Blätter als Salat gegessen, im Engadin werden sie dem Trinkwasser zugesetzt, um demselben einen erfrischenden Geschmack zu verleihen. In der fränkischen Volksmedizin gilt die Pflanze als gutes Mittel bei Rachen- und Kehlkopfentzündungen, man läßt Saft von Hauswurzblättern mit etwas Geißmilch morgens nüchtern trinken. Aus der Beobachtung, daß der Blitz der Pflanze wenig anhaben kann, entwickelte sich die schon oben erwähnte Benutzung als Blitzschutz. Auch heute noch findet man die Hauswurz auf vielen Dächern angepflanzt, und recht verbreitet ist der Glaube, daß das Verdorren der Pflanze den Tod eines Hausbewohners nach sich zieht. Im Gegensatz hierzu glaubt man allerdings in Graubünden und Toggenburg, daß ihr Blühen Unglück bringt.
- Hauswurzelsaft galt früher zusammen mit rotem Arsenik, Gummi und Alaun als ein Arkanum, das, auf die Hand gestrichen, es möglich machte, glühendes Eisen anzufassen.
Wirkung
Hauslauch stand schon bei der hl. Hildegard (Der Äbtissin Hildegard Causae et Curae, S. 198.) und Paracelsus (Paracelsus Sämtl. Werke, Bd. 2, S. 415, 640, Bd. 4, S. 604.) in therapeutischem Gebrauch.
Bock (Bock, Kreutterbuch, 1565, S. 139.) rät, die Hauswurz nur bei schwersten Fiebern und "hitzigen bauchflüssen", wie auch zum Austreiben von Würmern innerlich zu geben, sonst aber die äußerliche Anwendung zu bevorzugen, so z. B. bei Phrenesis, Augengeschwür, Ohrenfluß, Schmerzen bei Leber- und Nierenentzündung, Gliederschmerzen, Podagra und bei Brandwunden.
Auch Matthiolus (Matthiolus, New-Kreuterbuch, 1626, S. 393.) empfiehlt den lokalen Gebrauch bei Rotlauf, Augenentzündung, Brandwunden, fressenden Geschwüren und allen hitzigen Geschwülsten und Gebrechen.
Osiander (Osiander, Volksarzneymittel, S. 18, 219, 303, 373.) führt den Hauslauch als Volksmittel zur Hautreizung, bei Febris intermittens und skrofulösen Geschwüren an.
Med.-Rat Günther, Köln, ein Mitarbeiter Hufelands (Hufeland, Journal, Bd. 78, II., S. 108.), bezeichnet ihn als rheinisches Hausmittel bei szirrhösen Drüsenverhärtungen (zum innerlichen Gebrauch), mit dessen äußerlicher Anwendung auch er selbst schon gute Erfolge bei szirrhösen Verhärtungen der Zunge und bei Aphthen gehabt habe.
Uteruskrämpfe, Amenorrhöe, Aphthen und szirrhöse Verhärtungen der Zunge sind Indikationen, die Aschenbrenner (Aschenbrenner. Die neueren Arzneimittel u. Arzneizubereitungsformen, S. 273, Erlangen 1851.) für die Pflanze nennt. Die gleichen Anwendungsweisen finden sich auch in der homöopathischen Literatur, so bei Heinigke (Heinigke, Handb. d. hom. Arzneiwirkungsl., S. 582.) und Clarke (Clarke, A Dict. of pract. Mat. med., Bd. III, S. 1144.).
Nach Schulz (Schulz, Wirkg. u. Anwendg. d. dtsch. Arzneipfl., S. 225.) werden in der Volksmedizin die Blätter zu einer Kropfsalbe, der Saft gegen Hühneraugen und Sommersprossen und innerlich gegen Uterusneuralgien bei Dys- und Amenorrhöe gebraucht, nach Dinand (Dinand, Handb. d. Heilpflanzenkunde, S. 121.) der Hauswurztee bei Magengeschwüren, Menstruatio nimia, Dysenterie und Hämorrhagien.
Nach älteren Angaben enthalten die Blätter Ameisensäure (Döbereiner, Schweigg. Journ., Bd. 63, S. 88.), Calciummalat (Vauquelin, Ann. Chim. 1800, Nr. 34, S. 127.) und freie Äpfelsäure (Warburg, Unters. Bot. Inst. Tübingen, 2, 53, 1886.).
Verwendung in der Volksmedizin außerhalb des Deutschen Reiches (nach persönlichen Mitteilungen):
Dänemark: Innerlich gegen Blasenkrankheiten, äußerlich gegen Geschwüre.
Polen: Als Mucilaginosum auf Geschwüre.
Ungarn: Gegen Fieber, Epilepsie, äußerlich auf Warzen.
Anwendung in der Praxis auf Grund der Literatur und einer Rundfrage:
Sempervivum tectorum wird innerlich nur selten angewendet. Läßt man ein Blatt längere Zeit in einem Glas kaltem Wasser ziehen, so erhält man ein angenehmes kühlendes Getränk, daß bei Fieberkrankheiten und Verschleimungen der Atmungsorgane benutzt wird.
Bei Warzen, Sommersprossen, Kombustionen, Entzündungen der Augen, Rotlauf, Ulzera und Hühneraugen tun Auflagen der zerquetschten Blätter oder Einreibungen mit dem Safte gute Dienste. Gegen Schwerhörigkeit wird der Saft ins Ohr geträufelt.
Angewandter Pflanzenteil:
Die hl. Hildegard spricht vom Kraut. Paracelsus erwähnt den Saft, wie auch Bock und Matthiolus vor allem auf den Saft hinweisen. Die Angaben bei Osiander lauten: zerquetschte Pflanzen, zerquetschte Blätter und Saft aus den Blättern. Nach Schulz sind der Saft und die ganzen Blätter in volkstümlichem Gebrauch. Thoms führt die Blätter an. Das HAB. nennt zur Bereitung der Essenz die frischen, vor Beginn der Blüte gesammelten Blätter (§ 2).

The Houseleek was dedicated of old to Jupiter or Thor, and bore also the names of Jupiter's Eye, Thor's Beard, Jupiter's Beard, Barba Jovis (in France, Joubarbe des toits), from its massive clusters of flowers, which were supposed to resemble the beard of Jupiter. The German name of Donnersoart and the English Thunderbeard have the same meaning, being derived from Jupiter the Thunderer.
It was in high esteem among the Romans, who grew it in vases before their houses.
It is not really indigenous to this country, being a native of the mountain ranges of Central and Southern Europe and of the Greek islands, but it was introduced into Great Britain many centuries ago and is now found abundantly throughout the country, its large rosettes of fleshy leaves being a familiar sight on many an old cottage roof.
The word Leek is from the Anglo-Saxon leac, a plant, so that Houseleek means literally the House Plant. It was also called, in the fourteenth century, Ayron, Ayegreen and Sengreen, i.e. Evergreen.
The generic name Sempervivum, from the Latin semper (always) and vivo (I live), refers to its retention of vitality under almost all conditions, and the specific name tectorum bears witness to its usual place of growth - a roof.
It was supposed to guard what it grows upon against fire and lightning, and we read that Charlemagne ordered it to be planted upon the roof of every house, probably with this view. Whatever the origin of the custom, it prevails in many other parts of Europe, as well as in England and France. Welsh peasants believe it protects their houses from storms, and ensures the prosperity of their inmates. Superstitious country-folk in Wiltshire are often found to have a strong objection to the removal of a plant of Houseleek from their roof, or even to the plucking of the flowers by a stranger, believing it will bring death to the dwellers; it was formerly believed to be an efficient guard against sorcery as well as against lightning.
The root is perennial and is fibrous. The thick succulent leaves enable the plant to retain vitality even in the driest weather, acting as reservoirs of moisture. The leaves, arising directly from the root, grow in compact, rose-like tufts, 2 to 4 inches in diameter. They are extremely fleshy and juicy, flat, 1 to 2 inches long, sessile, oblong, though broader towards the middle of the rosette, sharply pointed, and the edges fringed with hairs and of a purple colour.
The flowers are produced in July, but generally very sparingly. The flower-stems do not arise from the rosettes of leaves, but are on separate, upright shoots, which are from 9 inches to a foot or more in height, round, fleshy and stout, slightly downy, with the leaves scattered thickly on them. The flowers are clustered together on only one side of the stem and are numerous, 2/3 to 1 inch in diameter, of a dull, pale red-purple. Like other flowers in this genus they are absolutely regular and symmetrical throughout, the sepals, petals and pistils being all of the same number - twelve in this species - and the stamens just twice as many, twentyfour in this case, twelve of which are arranged alternately with the petals and are imperfect, frequently bearing in their anthers instead of pollen dust, embryo seeds, which never attain maturity. The flowers are quite scentless.
This is a most useful as well as effective plant for an old wall, or to cover the high part of a rock-garden; it can be absolutely relied upon to withstand drought.
---Cultivation---This species will grow on rock-work, as well as on a roof, flourishing better than on ordinary ground. When once fixed, it will spread fast by means of its offsets. It may easily be made to cover the whole roof of a building, whether of tiles, thatch or wood, by sticking the offsets on with a little earth. Linnaeus stated that the plant was used in this manner as a preservative to the coverings of houses in certain parts of Sweden, and it is certain that it tends to preserve thatched roofs.
The flowering-heads die soon after they have blossomed, but the offsets soon supply their places.
---Part Used Medicinally---The fresh leaves and the expressed juice from them. The leaves have a saline, astringent and acid taste, but no odour.
---Constituents---The leaves contain malic acid in combination with lime.
---Medicinal Action and Uses---Refrigerant, astringent, diuretic. In rural districts, the bruised leaves of the fresh plant, or its juice, are often applied as a poultice to burns, scalds, contusions, scrofulous ulcers, and in inflammatory conditions of the skin generally, giving immediate relief. If the juice be mixed with clarified lard and applied to an inflamed surface, the inflammation is quickly reduced.
It can be used in many skin diseases. Some old authorities recommend mixing the juice with cream.
With honey, the juice has been used to assuage the soreness and ulcerated condition of the mouth in thrush, the mixture being used with a hair pencil.
Boerhaave, the famous Dutch physician, found 10 oz. of the juice beneficial in dysentery, but it is not admitted into modern practice.
In large doses, Houseleek juice is emetic and purgative.
Dose, 2 to 10 drops.
It is said to remove warts and corns. Parkinson tells us:
'The juice takes away corns from the toes and feet if they be bathed therewith every day, and at night emplastered as it were with the skin of the same House Leek.'The leaves sliced in two and the inner surface applied to warts, act as a positive cure for them.
Culpepper informs us that:
'Our ordinary Houseleek is good for all inward heats, as well as outward, and in the eyes or other parts of the body: a posset made of the juice is singularly good in all hot agues, for it cooleth and tempereth the blood and spirits and quencheth the thirst; and is also good to stay all defluction or sharp and salt rheums in the eyes, the juice being dropped into them. If the juice be dropped into the ears, it easeth pain.... It cooleth and restraineth all hot inflammations St. Anthony's fire (Erysipelas), scaldings and burnings, the shingles, fretting ulcers, ringworms and the like; and much easeth the pain and the gout.'
After describing the use of the leaves in the cure of corns, he goes on to say:
'it easeth also the headache, and the distempered heat of the brain in frenzies, or through want of sleep, being applied to the temples and forehead. The leaves bruised and laid upon the crown or seam of the head, stayeth bleeding at the nose very quickly. The distilled water of the herb is profitable for all the purposes aforesaid. The leaves being gently rubbed on any place stung with nettles or bees, doth quickly take away the pain.'
Gerard tells us the:
'iuice of Houseleeke, Garden Nightshade and the buds of Poplar, boiled in hog's grease, maketh the most singular Populeon that ever was used in Chirugerie.'
Galen recommends Houseleek for erysipelas and shingles, and Dioscorides as a remedy for weak and inflamed eyes. Pliny says it never fails to produce sleep.
In the fourteenth century it was used as an ingredient of a preparation for neuralgia, called hemygreyne, i.e. megrim, and an ointment used at that time for scalds and burns.
Culpepper speaks of the Small Houseleek, the Stonecrop Houseleek, the Common Stonecrop or Wallpepper, the Orpine, the Kidneywort and the Water Houseleek, some of which are known now under different names, the name Houseleek nowadays being reserved exclusively for the above-described species, Sempervivum tectorum.

Sempervivum tectorum L. (houseleek) leaf juice has been known as a traditional herbal remedy. The aim of the present study was the chemical characterization of its phenolic compounds and to develop quantitation methods for its main flavonol glycoside, as well as to evaluate its antinociceptive activity. Lyophilized houseleek leaf juice was studied by HPLC-DAD coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) to identify flavonol glycosides, hydroxy-benzoic and hydroxy-cinnamic acids. Ten flavonol glycosides and sixteen phenolic acid compounds were identified or tentatively characterized. Structure of the main flavonol compound was identified by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Three characteristic kaempferol glycosides were isolated and determined by LC-ESI-MS/MS with external calibration method, using the isolated compounds as standard. The main flavonol glycoside was also determined by HPLC-DAD. Validated HPLC-DAD and LC-ESI-MS/MS methods were developed to quantify kaempferol-3-O-rhamnosyl-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside and two other kaempferol glycosides. Antinociceptive activity of houseleek leaf juice was investigated by writhing test of mice. Sempervivum extract significantly reduced pain in the mouse writhing test.

The extract of Sempervivum tectorum L. (Crassulaceae) containing several flavonoids is widely used as an antiinflammatory agent in folk medicine. Previous studies have demonstrated that various flavonoids or flavonoid-containing plant extracts produce significant antinociception, but no data are available concerning their antinociceptive effect especially at the spinal level. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the antinociceptive activity of Sempervivum tectorum L. extract on acute and inflammatory pain sensitivity in awake rats. The pain sensitivity was assessed by the acute tail- flick test in intact rats and by the paw withdrawal test after carrageenan-induced inflammation using heat stimulus. The plant extract was administered intraperitoneally and intrathecally in rats. The intraperitoneal injection of a high dose of the extract (1000 mg/kg) significantly (p < 0.05) increased the paw withdrawal latency of the inflamed paw. The intrathecal administration (30-300 micro g) caused a small, but significant increase (10%-15%) in tail- flick latency. In the carrageenan-induced inflammatory model, the intrathecally applied extract (30-1000 micro g) significantly decreased, but did not relieve the thermal hyperalgesia. The results suggest that the spinal cord does not seem to play an important role in the antinociceptive effects of this plant extract.

The antioxidant properties of components of leaf extracts of the evergreen plant, Sempervivum tectorum (ST), have been evaluated using UV irradiated liposomal systems containing the spin trap 5-(diethoxyphosphoryl)-5-methyl-pyrroline-N-oxide. Decreases in free radical activity in the liposomal systems as measured by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy demonstrate that the lipophilic ST juice components, kaempferol (KA) and kaempferol-3-glucoside (KG) contribute significantly to the antioxidant properties of the juice. EPR spectral simulation established the presence of oxygen and carbon centered free radical adducts. The mixtures with low pH, citric and malic acid, and ST juice reveal increased EPR signals from oxygen centered radicals in comparison to the control, pointing to the important role of pH in oxygen radical formation. Parallel assays that measured thiobarbituric acid related substances confirm the antioxidant effects of KA and KG and explain the results of spin trapping experiments complicated by low pH's.

The extensive role of the microsomal mixed-function oxidase (MFO) system in the oxidation of endo-and xenobiotics, in the detoxication, in the generation of reactive free radicals and in the decomposition of the end products of lipid peroxides is well documented in the literature. Steatotic liver is a very frequent damage with different etiology. Drug metabolising reactions are suppressed in fatty liver, in which pathologically increased production of reactive oxygen intermediates may lead to the peroxidation of microsomal membrane lipids and to the change of membrane bound enzyme activities because of overwhelmed protective mechanisms. The subnormal activity of the MFO system may diminish the non specific resistance of the organism. Therefore we have studied the effects of natural flavonoids and polyphenolic compounds on the mixed-function oxidases. Antioxidant, O(2)(-&z.rad;) and &z. rad;OH scavenger properties of Sempervivum tectorum extract (STF1) were proved by EPR spectroscopic and chemiluminometric techniques. Potential bioactive constituents were determined by chromatography (HPLC, TLC) and spectrometric (UV, UV-VIS) methods. In the present study we reflect on the membrane stabilising, antioxidant and lipid metabolism modifying effects of this extract. It was established that activities of NAD(P)H reductase and content of cytochrome P450 were normalised in liver microsomes of hyperlipidemic rats, if the animals were treated with STF1 (2 g/bwkg for 9 days in drinking water parallel with fat-rich diet feeding). Fatty acid composition, examined by HRGLC analysis, was changed beneficially. NADPH induced lipid peroxidation was also decreased in microsomes in in vivo and in vitro experiments. At the same time the STF1 had no significant influence on MFO system in normolipidemic animals and on cytochrome b5 concentration of microsome fractions of hyperlipidemic rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE:
Sempervivum tectorum L. (Crassulaceae), known as houseleek, is used in traditional medicine in the treatment of ear inflammation. It can be spread as a pack on wounds, sores, burns, and abscesses and also on painful areas attacked by gout as a refrigerant and astringent. Drinking tea prepared from leaves of S. tectorum is recommended for ulcer treatment. The present study was designed to investigate ethopharmacological use of S. tectorum in the southern Serbia and to further scientifically justify and confirm effectiveness of the leaf juice used in ethnomedicine for ear inflammation, against otitis linked bacteria.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
Ethnopharmacological survey on the use of S. tectorum in southern Serbia was performed using semi structured questionnaires via a face-to-face interview. Chemical composition of the leaf juice regarding phenolic compounds and organic acids was analyzed. Antimicrobial activity was tested on bacteria isolated from ear swabs of the patients suffering from the ear pain (otitis). Anti-quorum-sensing activities of the juice were further investigated on Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
RESULTS:
Ethnopharmacological survey revealed the use of S. tectorum in southern Serbia for the treatment of ear pain, warts, cancer, stomachache, ulcer and high blood sugar level with the highest fidelity level (FL) for the ear pain. The phenolic composition of the S. tectorum leaf juice consisted of flavonol glycosides, with kaempferol-3-O-rhamnosyl-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside as the majority compound. Organic acids composition revealed malic acid as the most dominant one. Antimicrobial and anti-quorum-sensing activities of the juice showed to be promising.
CONCLUSION:
Ethnopharmacological use of S. tectorum juice for treating ear pain is justified, since the juice possessed antimicrobial activity towards clinical isolates of bacteria linked to otitis.
