De knolkers of knolcapucien of Mashua, familielid van de Oost-Indische kers, de gekrulde knollen zijn peperig scherp maar wel wat bitter. De smaak wordt beter na een vorstperiode of na koken. De plant is afkomstig uit de Andes, waar ze een 'slechte' reputatie heeft, omdat de knollen de seksuele goesting zouden verminderen.
Het is mogelijk een an-afrodisiacum, d.w.z. dat bij de mannen de lusten worden onderdrukt en een erectie wordt geremd. Bij testen op ratten bleek het testosteron met 45% te dalen [16]. Volgens [15] werd er gevriesdroogde mashua gebruikt van 1gram/kg (90% is water). Dus een man van 65 kg moet pakweg 650 gram mashua per dag eten. Het duurde bij de ratten elf dagen voor de effecten merkbaar en het dubbele aantal dagen voor ze weer weg (hersteld) waren.
In de Andes bevelen mannen het aan als voedsel voor vrouwen, maar eten het zelf niet. Doch het is bekend dat vrouwen het in het eten verwerken om te voorkomen dat hun mannen ontrouw worden.
Voor mannen onderdrukt het de mannelijkheid, voor vrouwen betekent mashua verbetering van de vruchtbaarheid. Er wordt gemeld (J. Leon, 1964) dat vrouwen het eten om kinderen te krijgen [13].
We zijn in de literatuur een waarschuwing tegen gekomen dat het beter is geen mashua tijdens zwangerschap te eten. Of het waar is en waarom is onduidelijk.
Mashua bevat p-methoxybenzyl isothiocyanaat. Dat is de oorzaak van veel van de toegekende heilzame werkingen. Volgens enigszins wetenschappelijke beweringen [11] is mashua goed voor lever en nieren en verlicht het problemen met prostaat en urinewegen (breekt nier- en blaasstenen af [14]). Het is urine-afdrijvend. Het helpt tegen huidaandoeningen (eczeem), ontstekingen en malaria koorts. En het doodt luizen. Niet vreemd dat Mashua’s zus, de Oost-Indische kers, in 2014 in Duitsland door de Universiteit van Würzburg was uitgeroepen tot heilzame plant van het jaar.
In een ander wetenschappelijk onderzoek blijken de knollen bij ratten wel het aantal spermacellen te verminderen maar niet het gehalte aan testosteron.

Tubers - cooked. A peppery flavour, it is rather unpleasant to many tastes. The flavour can be improved somewhat by freezing the tubers after they have been cooked, they are then considered to be a delicacy by many people[183]. We have also noticed an improvement in the flavour if the tubers are harvested after they have been frosted, though if the frost is too heavy they can damage the tubers. Other reports suggest half-drying the tubers before use. The tubers can be up to 10cm long and 5cm thick. They are high in vitamin C. The dried tuber contains up to 16% protein. Leaves - raw or cooked as a vegetable. Flowers - raw.
The tuber is considered to be an anaphrodisiac in the Andes, reducing sexual desire. Many men, therefore, refuse to eat it. Clinical trials have indicated a reduction of up to 45% in some male hormones when the tuber forms a considerable part of the diet, but no loss in fertility has been observed.
The growing plant is very resistant to diseases and insects, it contains nematocidal, bactericidal and insecticidal compounds.. (Popenoe. H. et al Lost Crops of the Incas)

Tropaeolum tuberosum is an edible-tuber-producing cultigen of the Andes mountains. Historical beliefs relating to the effects of this species on human reproductive potential continue to the present day. T. tuberosum subsp. tuberosum contains p-methoxybenzylglucosinolate as its major secondary metabolite. The putative anti-aphrodisiac activity of T. tuberosum was examined in male rats fed a diet containing tubers of this taxon. Experimental animals and controls showed equal capability in impregnating females, although animals fed T. tuberosum showed a 45% drop in their blood levels of testosterone/dihydrotestosterone. This decrease appears to be related to the presence of isothiocyanates in the tubers. Feeding studies of female guinea pigs and in vitro studies to test the 17 beta-estradiol binding inhibition of plant extracts and of pure isothiocyanates failed to substantiate any estrogenic activity of these taxa. However, preliminary results suggest that N, N-di-(methoxy-4-benzyl)thiourea competitively inhibits estradiol binding and may have estrogenic activity. The antibiotic, insecticidal, nematocidal and diuretic properties of isothiocyanates substantiate several of the uses of T. tuberosum in Andean folk medicine.

Tropaeolum tuberosum Ruiz & Pavon, along with other several species, is an edible-tuber crop that grows in the Andean region. Folk medicine describes the use of mashua to reduce reproductive function in men. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of mashua (1 g kg(-1)) on sperm production in rats during 7, 12, 21 and 42 days of treatment. The following parameters were assessed: reproductive organ weights, spermatid count and daily sperm production (DSP), sperm count in epididymis and sperm transit and serum testosterone levels. Freeze-dried extract of mashua had 3.7 g 100 g(-1) of benzyl glucosinolate. Mashua-treated rats showed a reduction in testicular spermatid number and DSP from day 12 to day 42; meanwhile, the effect of mashua was noted in epididymal sperm count after 12 and 42 days of treatment. In addition, epididymal sperm transit time was delayed at day 7 and it was accelerated on days 12 and 21 of treatment. No differences in serum testosterone levels were found between rats treated with vehicle and mashua after 42 days of treatment. Finally, mashua reduces testicular function after one spermatogenic cycle by reducing spermatid and sperm number, DSP and epididymal sperm transit time.
