Deze naar munt (kauwgom) ruikende struik komt uit Zuid-Amerika. Hij is nauw verwant aan de citroenverbena. De fijne blaadjes kunnen zo van de struik worden gegeten en verfrissen de adem. Bovendien kunnen de blaadjes ook heel goed voor thee worden gebruikt. Het aangename en niet dominante muntaroma is zeer geschikt om met andere theekruiden te mengen. Ook vruchtendesserts krijgen een frisse, extravagante smaak als een paar klein gesneden blaadjes worden toegevoegd. De bladeren kunnen gemakkelijk van de steel worden verwijderd. Ze worden direct vers gebruikt of op een donkere, luchtige plek gelegd om te drogen.
Gebruik
• Oogst: een tak van 10-20 cm lengte afknippen. Met één hand bovenaan vasthouden en met de andere hand de blaadjes tegen de groeirichting in eraf halen. Als verfrissing kunnen 2 blaadjes op de tong worden gelegd. Het bevordert de doorbloeding in de mond en het gehemelte en verfrist op een aangename manier. Absoluut niet vergelijkbaar met het scherpe mentholaroma van bv. hoestbonbons.
• Theerecept: voor een heerlijk geurende, verfrissende en opwekkende thee kunt u ca. 10 blaadjes in een kopje doen, heet water erover gieten en ca. 5-10 minuten laten trekken.
Verzorging
• De Argentijnse munt heeft een losse, doorlaatbare bodem nodig op een zonnige standplaats
• De munt verhout snel en kan zelfs als hoogstam worden gekweekt
• De plant is weliswaar uiterst robuust, bossig en verdraagt kou maar is op onze breedtegraad niet winterhard. Daarom moet de plant vorstvrij, zo mogelijk koel overwinteren. De struik verliest gedurende deze tijd zijn bladeren maar deze komen in het voorjaar weer terug.
• De munt is een ideale potplant. Zij wordt ca. 1,50 m hoog en kan naar behoefte worden gesnoeid en gevormd.
• De struik is sowieso een groeiwonder. Zij kan ca. alle 6 weken worden gesnoeid, oftewel geoogst worden en groeit dan met alle kracht verder tot de volgende oogst.

Effects of the essential oils of Lippia turbinata and Lippia polystachya (Verbenaceae) on the temporal pattern of locomotion of the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae.

The essential oils (EO) of Lippia turbinata (TUR) and Lippia polystachya (POL) have shown lethal effects against mosquito larvae. The present work evaluated whether these EO at doses ranging from sublethal to lethal (20, 40 and 80 ppm) modify the temporal pattern of locomotion of Culex quinquefasciatus larvae. Larvae were individually placed in glass boxes, and their activity recorded at 0.3 s intervals during 40 min. Individuals treated with doses >40 ppm of either EO significantly decreased their ambulation speed and the percentage of total time ambulating compared to controls. TUR 80 ppm decreased their ambulation even sooner than POL 80 ppm, when compared to their respective controls. These findings are consistent with the neurotoxic effect against insects attributed to alpha-Thujone, a main component of both EO. A detrended fluctuation fractal analysis evaluating the complexity and organisation of the temporal pattern of locomotion showed fractal patterns in all animals. Both sublethal and lethal doses of TUR and POL increased the complexity of ambulation. Interestingly, for POL 20 ppm, an increase in complexity was observed, while no changes in general activity were detected, suggesting that fractal analysis may be more sensitive to detect behavioural changes than general activity evaluation.

Insecticidal properties of essential oils from Lippia turbinata and Lippia polystachya (Verbenaceae) against Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes are important vectors of diseases to humans and domestic animals. Chemical control of vectors remains a main resource for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases. Due to the development of insecticide resistance and risks to human health and the environment of synthetic compounds, the search for alternative pesticides is encouraged. This work assessed the insecticidal activity of essential oils (EOs) from Lippia turbinata and L. polystachya from Argentina on Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes. EOs were extracted by hydro-distillation and analyzed with gas-liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The insecticidal activity against mosquito larvae, pupae, and adults were evaluated according to World Health Organization protocols. Concentrations ranking from 10 to 160 ppm were assessed at 1, 2, 3, and 24 h posttreatment. The composition of the EO of L. polystachya and L. turbinata were qualitatively similar, with alpha-thujone and carvone as main constituent; differences were mostly due to the proportion of each component. beta-caryophyllene was also an important constituent of the EO of L. turbinata. Both EO were larvicidal at concentrations of 80 ppm or higher, but only L. turbinata was adulticidal. No pupal mortality was detected. The potential of these EOs for vector control is discussed.
