Lagenaria siceraria /
De fleskalebas (Lagenaria siceraria) is een eenjarige, eenhuizige, kruipende of klimmende, kruidachtige plant uit de komkommerfamilie (Cucurbitaceae).De vruchten variëren sterk in vorm en grootte. Ze kunnen rond, peervormig, buikig, fles- of knotsvormig zijn. Vaak zijn ze gekromd. De vruchten kunnen tot 1 m lang worden. De rijpe, harde schil is groen of wit gespikkeld tot wit.
Veel variëteiten worden als siervrucht gebruikt.
KALEBAS 'African Warty' / 'Verruqueuse de Maurice' (Eng: Bottle-Gourd, Creools: Poe, Hindoest.: Lauki) (Lagenaria siceraria) Een vreemde verschijning! Langwerpige vruchten, 20x10 cm, lichtgroen van kleur, tot zover nog betrekkelijk saai. Het boeiende van dit ras zijn de talloze wratten over de hele vrucht verspreid. Het blad heeft een speciale sterke geur.
KALEBAS 'Amphore' (Eng: Bottle-Gourd, Creools: Poe, Hindoest.: Lauki) (Lagenaria siceraria)
Slanke beauty! De hals is 2x zo lang als de buik en heeft geen verdikking (in tegenstelling tot Speckled Swan). De buik is hangend geteeld iets ovaal (als een druppel) en liggend geteeld platrond van vorm. Donkergroen met heldere, lichtgroene vlekken. Zeer hard en gemakkelijk te drogen.
KALEBAS 'Apple' (Eng: Bottle-Gourd, Creools: Poe, Hindoest.: Lauki) (Lagenaria siceraria)
Een prachtige, donkergroene vrucht met lichtgroene aders. De vorm is die van een (soms iets hoge) appel. Dit snelrijpende soort is zeer apart en hard van schil.
KALEBAS 'Big Ball' (Eng: Bottle-Gourd, Creools: Poe, Hindoest.: Lauki) (Lagenaria siceraria)
Flink grote, peervormige vruchten. De hals is dik en ongeveer net zo lang als de buik dik is. Middengroen met lichtgroene spikkels. Ze wegen een imposante 10-14 kg!
Phytochemical, Ethnobotanical and Pharmacological Profile of Lagenaria siceraria: - A Review

Abstract: In traditional systems of medicine, different parts (leaves, stem, flower, root, seeds and even whole plant) of lagenaria siceraria (known as lauki in Hindi), has been used in the ointment for ailment of various diseases throughout India. The fruit of cultivated lagenaria siceraria is the good source of different nutrients components like protein, fat, fibre, carbohydrates, calcium, magnesium. The plant has also been suggested to possess antioxidant activity, laxative, cardioprotective, diuretic, hepatoprotective, hypolipidemic, central nervous system stimulant, anthelmentic, antihypertensive, immunosuppressive analgesic, adaptogenic and free radical scavenging activity. This work reviews the pharmacological evidence of extracts of plants from the lagenaria siceraria, giving an overview of the most studied biological effects and the known phytochemical composition. Although more studies are necessary, lagenaria siceraria exhibits proven potential to become of important pharmacological interest.
