Arthropleura (Greek for 'jointed ribs') is a genus of massive millipedes that lived in what is now North America and Europe around 345 to 290 million years ago, from the Viséan stage of the lower Carboniferous Period to the Sakmarian stage of the lower Permian Period. It is a type species was Arthropleura armata.
Also known by Scottish people as iomadh-cas for myriapods or Mòran chasan-iomadh for Arthropleura.
Arthropleura armata had a maximum length of 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches). At Joggins, Nova Scotia, tracks from Arthropleura as large as 50 centimeters (20 inches) have been discovered. It is one of the largest arthropods ever known, as large as the eurypterid Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, whose length is estimated at 2.33 to 2.59 meters (7 ft 8 in – 8 ft 6 in).
In 2021, a fossil, most likely a shed exoskeleton (exuviae) of an Arthropleura, was reported. Its estimated width was 55 centimeters (22 in), its length ranged from 1.9 meters (6 ft 3 in) to 2.63 meters (8 ft 8 in) and its body mass was 50 kg (110 lb). Unlike other millipedes, the Arthropleura had a stalked compound eyes as depicted in 2024.
Due in part to the absence of big terrestrial vertebrate predators and in part to the higher partial pressure of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere during the lower Carboniferous, Arthropleura were able to grow larger than modern arthropods. Large specimens of Arthropleura from the Serpukhovian stage, when the oxygen pressure was just slightly greater than that of present Earth (around 23 percent), are documented, indicating that gigantism may not have been primarily caused by high oxygen pressure.
Millipedes are not poisonous, but some species can produce irritating fluids that may cause allergic reactions in some people. Since they mostly consume decomposing organic matter and break down dead plant matter, millipedes are generally not thought to be harmful to plants. However, when they are present in large quantities, they may harm young, soft plants or roots, particularly in dry soil where they require moisture, which could be problematic in some circumstances.
Arthropleura would not have been able to survive in the Holocene as there would not be enough oxygen in the air to support its massive size. Their oxygen was recommended in Carboniferous rather than in Permian period. This species has be formed into smaller size much like Amazonian giant centipedes. The high oxygen levels may have contributed to the large size of insects, millipedes, and scorpions. For example, there were dragonflies called griffinflies the size of hawks.
There is no firm evidence for Arthropleura's diet, as fossils previously thought to represent coprolites, such as lycopod fragments and pteridophyte spores, are now thought to be the coexistence of plant fossils and exuvia remnants. Nonetheless, the interpretation of a herbivorous diet is still recognized, and it is believed that Arthropleura ate not only spores but also sporophylls and seeds, given its massive size, which may have necessitated enough sustenance.
Giant millipedes are generally not dangerous to humans and can be handled safely. Arthropleura armata, however, it was shy to humans and it doesn't cared to us.
However, the primary threats to Arthropleura are humans, crocodiles, eagles, and big felines, as they are heavily hunted for their meat and exoskeleton.
Between 345 and 290 million years ago, between the Viséan stage of the lower Carboniferous Period and the Sakmarian stage of the lower Permian Period, Arthropleura armata dominated and resided in forested swamps in what is now North America.

The Holocene environment has shrunk the size of the Arthropleura armata that Bryan Adams and his allies spotted in 2017 on his house. Holocene air kills every Arthropleura armata individual; some survive and undergo mutations that result in their dwarf stature.
As in Two Lights and Worldcraft series, the team Sàr-mhath (Scottish Gaelic term for Superior, the group of multiethnic eco-terrorist hailed from Dinojerulla Kingdom) were illegally breed prehistoric animals from BioLyfe Enterprise, including the Carboniferous animals via the Drift Portals. The Felsőbbrendű (calque word from Hungarian for Superior, respectively), a group of Yanomami and Comanche merchants from Inorthia Kingdom who were the enemies of Sàr-mhath want to stop the overexploitation and pirating the precious stuffs from Zowhringe culture.
