Okpe
“ We do not talk about the enigmatic beast that looks like a peccary and has the guts to eat the entire Tehuelche tribe, even the child. This beast was made of hair from all ages, stone-like. ”

The Okpe (Petragigantus bestiasus) is a last surviving notoungulate.
Coming soon.
The Okpe is the most recent extant member of the notoungalate group. It has a peccary-like appearance, is composed of hair rather than keratin, and resembles unbreakable volcanic rock devoid of any weak points or soft parts. Okpe has a clubbed tail resembling an ankylosaur and three toes harder than human nails. as the outcome of glyptodont and ankylosaur evolution coming together. It also has weak vision and hazel eyes.
The Okpe is a fiercely guarded predator that is highly valued beneath the surface. Okpe slams, its own weight generating an earthquake. With the exception of weapons with long blades like hammers, its skin was extremely hard. It was also impervious to slicing weapons like swords.
The Okpe is semi-aquatic, or at least water-loving, like hippos and moose, despite having rock-based skin. Their dense bones suggest that they were adept at wading and submerging in shallow wetlands, and while they are not deep swimmers, they are at ease near marshes and rivers.
The Okpe is a herbivorous animal that also engages in some geophagy. It is mostly a grazer, eating grasses, leaves, shrubs, mosses, rocks, pebbles, clay, and aquatic plants. This ungulate coexists alongside xenatherians and toxodontids in both dry land and marsh habitats. One of the biggest herbivores in South America, the okpe plays a significant role in the formation of grasslands, wetlands, swamps, and mountains. In earlier to more recent times, it has also served as prey for large predators such as sabertooth cats, dire wolves, anacondas, humans, elephant seals, and giant crocodilians.
Likely viviparous (live birth), like all mammals
Okpe will gave birth to one large calf at a time
Long gestation, similar to rhinos (12–16 months)
Slow reproductive rate common for large herbivores
The Okpe is a slow-moving, semi-solitary animal that lives in small groups and spends a lot of time feeding or resting near water. They might have used water or mud for protection and cooling because they lacked water-based sweat glands. Like large herbivores, they might have become enraged or protective when assaulted. The Okpe is quite hostile due to its poor vision, hearing, and touch, but it has a keen sense of smell.
Habitat loss / degradation: water bodies drying up, wetlands drained or diverted, mountains will eroded, cutting down trees, loss of grasslands near water.
Hunting / poaching: Okpes are hunted for meat, skin, and their large canine “ivory.”
Human-wildlife conflict: as human settlements and agriculture expand, Okpes can come into conflict with humans (damage to crops, risk of attacks), which sometimes leads to killings or retaliatory hunts.
Regionally, some populations are more threatened than others; conservation efforts are uneven across the range.
IUCN Red List: Critically Endangered (CR)

Once, the Okpe snatched an older youngster who was smart enough to grasp onto a limb overhead and escape from his kidnapper. While the Okpe searched for its prey and begged it to return, the child fled back to his hamlet. The skin of a dead mare was laid out on the ground, as the Tehuelche do in times of need. As the Okpe trudged through after the child, it tripped on the stretched hide and fell with such force that its granite armor trembled! The Okpe started sobbing in defeat that his tears created a river as big as its teeth. It never again disturbed the Tehuelche tribe.
