Qurio (Sanguinala dracosocius) is the fictional species of flying parasite, the only lamprey introduced in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak.

Etymology

Qurio in the Wyverian word: qurijé, for this species.

Physical Appearance

The lamprey had no eyes, fully developed teeth, rough and smooth skin that ranged from magenta to scarlet, and flame-like forelimbs, dorsal fins, and tailfins that gave off a purplish red flame. They have a vermilion helium sac close to their gills. In reality, Qurio was an eyeless variation of the jawless, amphibious lamprey. It is not a true worm. Their fins are aligned from bony fish into some sort of cartilage instead of bones, adding the dorsal fin on their backs or acting from the waist down like a real lamprey.

Abilities

Qurios are Malzeno or Gaismagorm's assistants; both Elder Dragons stand in for the devil and the vampire, respectively. Living in groups and sucking their mouths into unique organs close to the helium sac that drain both the blood and the soul. Qurio can use its dorsal fins and helium sac to fly through the air, but in groups, they can also return to their master and draw blood from their victims.

The Qurio can transmit a virus that sickens its victims and drain the lifeforce from any creatures, including humans, wyverians, lynians, and metahumans. The Qurio are capable of producing the nutrients to survive on their own, so they require hosts like the Afflicted and the aforementioned Elder Dragons in order to cycle and feed on the energy needed, thereby empowering their host. Their teeth are strong enough to puncture any material they latch onto. The illness has a high mortality rate for people because it first causes them to become unconscious, then they pass away.

Ecology

50 years ago before the events of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak as depicted in Monster Hunter Frontier, the Old Elgado Citadel fell under attack from an Infected Malzeno and various other monsters due the Qurio causing havoc. During this period, the juvenile Qurio attempted parasitizing humans, but that proved ineffective and lead to a deadly plague. All monsters fled from the Citadel, expect for the Malzeno due to said region being its home territory: it then fought the newly-emerged Gaismagorm for dominance over the region. It seems that the rivalry between the Archdemon of the Abyss and the Guardian Knight of the Kingdom has continued for over hundreds of years.

When Malzeno and Gaismagorm died, the Qurio quickly evolved and adapted to their surroundings by searching for new hosts. This is one of their special abilities. Wherever an Afflicted Monster outbreak occurs, glowing red particles can be seen floating in the vicinity, even contaminating certain materials. It is theorized these particles are most likely the eggs or young of the Qurio.

Behavior

Generally don't have any emotions, that's mindless and cold-blooded species that lived in the groups called murderer of Qurios. They lived with Malzeno or Gaismagorm on the side. After their master dies, they move to the next target and any animals cursed by the blood and turn into Afflicted or Bloodthirsty type monsters like Tetranadon or Nargacuga. Their loss of drinking the blood, maybe die out of dehydration.

Distribution and Habitat

Qurios lived along with the Elder Dragons as a sign of symbiotic relationship and mutualism. Qurios lived without their master and lives in Mediterranean forest only, but rarely sightings in all biomes other than moon or polar regions.

Tamed

Under the particular circumstance, True Qurios cannot be tamed; nonetheless, you must first have control of Infected or Primordial Malzeno in order to command Qurios.

Lore

Qurio originated from Romania and Moldova in ancient times alongside Malzeno. Prior to the origin of vampires, the Qurio and real-life vampire bats are considered life-draining abilities that sucks blood of the victim. Some populations in Sumer in Iraq, used Qurio to enhance the humans into a vampire as a result of genetic engineering and transgene from ordinary humans as a monster.
