“ Ominous clouds, torn apart, unleashing a torrent of rain.

Then, an unrelenting typhoon, connecting the heavens once again.

Finally it shows its form: A hurricane made flesh.

Bringing death through gale and storm, a dragon god ready to thresh. ”

Amatsu (Couguenodraco brochorephtrios) is an Elder Dragon introduced in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd.

Etymology

Amatsu's name in Japanese: 天津, あまつ, which means "heavens", "sky", or "imperial".

Physical Appearance

Amatsu has a unique body structure similar to that of a Leviathan. Its head itself is quite small, though it is adorned with massive golden horns, flanked by tendrils of flesh. Amatsu's body is largely pale white in color and covered entirely in fins that stretch along all four limbs. From its back rise more pointed fins, whereas its underside is gray and scaled.

Amatsu has almost useless feet and tiny, nearly useless back legs because it flies through the air and never touches the ground. More white fins surround the front legs. Its wing membranes have more pronounced red veins when it is angry, and when it is about to die, its chest, horns, and eyes have a faint golden luminescence.

Abilities

Ko te takenga mai o Amatuu ka taea e te aituā te hinga i nga hoariri ki te kore e kitea e te tupuhi kaha ake.

Amatsu's unique abilities allow it to freely control storms and wind, allowing it to alter the weather around it. In addition to swimming freely through the sky using its fins, Amatsu can stir up destructive gales and tornadoes, protect itself with a barrier of wind, and cause wide-reaching torrential storms. It also stores large amounts of water in its body, which it can use to fire pressurized water blasts strong enough to blow away clouds and cleave stones. Unlike Kushala Daora, another Elder Dragon with control over wind, Amatsu's abilities are far stronger and do not seem to diminish no matter how injured or impaired it is; in fact, they only intensify as it sustains injuries.

Amatsu's mere presence is accompanied by furious cyclones and torrential storms, which can decimate the landscape and drive other monsters out of their territories. Its sheer destructive power is said to be greater than that of natural disasters, making it an extreme threat feared by many. In Kamura Village, the Amatsu is considered an even greater threat than even the Twin Serpents, Wind Serpent Ibushi and Thunder Serpent Narwa/Narwa the Allmother themselves. Amatsu gains the ability to use the electric element once in its second phase, using various blasts and summoned bolts of lightning.

Ballista Shots and the Ballista Binder can be used on Amatsu. If it is hit with Ballista Binder while it is performing an attack, other than its sucking tornado or water beam explosion, it will fall to the ground for a while, leaving some difficult-to-reach parts, such as its back fins and tail, open to attack.

Amatsu's Super Tornado readying time is approximately 7.4 seconds, while the sucking time is 2.79 seconds (simplified determination).

If Amatsu is put to sleep, it continues to float and does not fall to the ground.

Weaknesses

Its front two fins can each be broken or damaged. The head can be damaged twice: the first time Amatsu loses one horn, the second time its right mustache is cut. Amatsu's back can also be broken. In addition, its tail can be severed, giving two extra carves.

Once an Amatsu dies, the storm it created will dissipate within seconds, showing this unique, hard jade-colored organ has great power.

Amatsu's roar requires earplugs to block.

Ecology

Like most other Elder Dragons, Amatsu's role in the ecological niche is unknown. In the Infernal Springs, it has to contend with other monsters such as Apex Monsters, Rare Species, Elder Dragon-Level Monsters, and Elder Dragons. It is powerful enough to handle Arzuros, Goss Harag, Jyuratodus, Rakna-Kadaki, Somnacanth, and Tetranadon.

In addition, despite the Apex Zinogre's overwhelming strength, when it was forced into combat with it, Amatsu defeated it easily after a brief struggle. It has also been seen defeating the Crimson Glow Valstrax, an elder dragon of the calamity class who has previously been referred to as a peerless monster.

The Amatsu has a large number of fins and wings along its body, which contribute to its ability to fly smoothly through the air. Its horns are large compared to the size of its head, much closer to the size of the fins. These horns show that nothing will attack Amatsu due to its sheer power. Its forearms are long; they are slender and designed for flight, not walking. The amount of webbing in its fins and wings makes the Amatsu seem larger than it actually is, as they billow out in the wind. Its actual body structure is very similar to that of a Leviathan: long and curvy, with small back legs and a fairly large tail.

Its control over storms surpasses even that of Kushala Daora; this power comes from a unique jade-colored organ called the "Storm Vesicle." This organ stores large amounts of water and is how Amatsu is able to produce its terrifying storms. Unlike Kushala Daora, its wind aura does not protect it from attacks; instead, it seems to be used more aggressively as a way of making its charging attacks more dangerous. Its most deadly form of attack is a massive beam of wind and water fired from its mouth; when the beam hits the ground, it releases a torrent of water on anything nearby the point of impact.

Behavior

Amatsu is known to use its destructive storms to eliminate all competition in a large area when claiming territory. Amatsu is known for being very territorial and will attack any intruders on sight, especially flying monsters or human airships. It prefers to stay at a high altitude, but when faced with a direct threat, it will descend to a lower altitude.

Distribution and Habitat

The Amatsu was thought to live only in the Sacred Pinnacle and the areas around Yukumo Village, the former of which is also where it is battled. It spends the majority of its time patrolling high in the skies, making it difficult to track its movements. It has also been seen in Infernal Springs and on Mount Hakusan or Mount Takao, Japan.

Tamed

Amatsu is one of the apex predators that use the special taming method, the survivor must attack Amatsu until it is at 2% health. The Amatsu will then enter "sleep mode" and floats to never touches ground down. While it is asleep, the survivor must feed it with a Pounamu o Aotearoa.

Pounamu plays a very important role in Māori culture and is a taonga (treasure) and represent the three primary virtues: valour (the sword), wisdom (the mirror), and benevolence (the jade or pounamu) as Three Regalia of Japan, as well as E toru nga Taonga o Aotearoa. The Pounamu Tūpato is the magical artifact of jade resembles Yasakani no Magatama, both are actually Ancient Astronauts in origin for instantly tame Amatsu.

Lore

Tsukito City in the Monster Hunter universe and New Osaka City of Maui, Hawaii, on Tangled the Series were both attacked and completely destroyed in the past by the Amatsu specimen in the Infernal Springs and Mauna Kea, seemingly without cause. Amatsumagatsuchi's origins are unknown. According to local lore in the villages of Yukumo and Kamura, Amatsu was a very rare creature that was more powerful than Ibushi and Narwa and was close to the Black Dragon Tier. The first Amatsu-related incident occurred in Tsukito City, a former affluent kingdom located far from Yukumo and Kamura. Yomogi, the sole princess, and Kagero were both born in this city.

In Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Yomogi was shown to be the apparent heir apparent to Tsukito City, which was decimated by the Great Calamity and later revealed to be the Amatsu. Kagero the Merchant was given custody of her and was to be her adoptive father.

Clint Barton, whose family was devoured by Amatsu, causing his homeland to be washed away, is enlisted by Natasha Romanoff in Tokyo in our realm. Clint Barton is a vigilante. Amatsu challenges the use of superhuman abilities by the X-Men and Avengers, as well as later Street Fighter characters. While grieving Romanoff's passing and traveling to Kamura village to inform Yomogi that their two worlds had been destroyed by Amatsu, Barton was forced to return home with his family by Thanos and not Amatsu.
