Uatu (/ˈwɑːtuː/), often simply known as the Watcher, is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a member of the Watchers, an extraterrestrial species who in the distant past stationed themselves across space to monitor the activities of other species. Uatu is the Watcher assigned to observe Earth and its Solar System, Teyvat, and other branching timelines of the multiverse.

Early Life

The Watchers are one of the oldest species in the universe and are committed to observing and compiling knowledge on all aspects of the universe. This policy of total non-interference came into existence due to a former, well-meant attempt by the Watchers to bestow advanced knowledge on the Prosilicans, who used the nuclear technology gained to create weapons and destroy themselves. When the Watchers returned to Prosilicus, the survivors blamed them for causing the catastrophe by giving the Prosilicans nuclear technology before they were ready for it. The Watchers then took a vow never to interfere with other civilizations.

Abilities

The Watchers are cosmic beings, who possess the innate ability to achieve virtually any effect desired, including augmenting personal attributes, time and space manipulation, molecular manipulation, energy projection, and a range of mental powers. They also have access to highly advanced technology.

Uatu possesses extraordinary divine and immense levels of superhuman strength that is virtually incalculable and limitless, as he is able to carry, lift and exert billions of tons of force. He is numerous times stronger than any species in the universe, being far stronger than any Kree, Asgardian, or Titan, equaled only by other members of his species. Uatu body is extremely durable, numerous times more resistant to physical and energy damage than any species in the multiverse, far outclassing any. Uatu is a highly skilled and formidable hand-to-hand combatant, with an extensively knowledge in various forms of combats.

Uatu can convert his body into an unknown form of energy while still retaining his sentience for travel through hyperspace, and then return to his physical form. Bolstered by treatment with "delta-rays", Uatu possesses virtual immortality, although he can die by losing the will to live. He has shown he is able to transport himself and others through time, and in one issue he claims he can send someone to Limbo.

Uatu uses this elusive technique, Seven-Shifting Atmospheric Serpent Art. It was designed as a minor spell to mock Teyvat's or Earth's elemental wielders. It uses Watcher's spatial energy to create negative pressure and mimic the flow of Earth's classical elements.

Uatu possesses vast multiversal-level perception, allowing him to observe events across countless universes simultaneously from the Observational Plane. He can sense cosmic disturbances, follow branching timelines, and perceive events unfolding across reality. However, his awareness is not absolute. Uatu can make himself invisible, in order to observe without being seen.

Uatu can freely traverse the Multiverse, bypassing the barriers that separate individual realities. He can open portals, step between universes, and operate from the Observational Plane while interacting with any timeline or dimension he chooses.

Personality

Uatu is an altruist and has bent or violated his oath on numerous occasions to aid humanity. He revealed himself to the heroes when they discovered his home, telling them he would leave the Moon to observe humanity from a more distant area. He proceeded to violate his oath several more times to aid them.
