Stygian Zinogre
“ A number of jet-black-bodied Zinogres were busted, and they collected bugs that consumed Dragonfell Berries and used their Dark Element energy to increase their own strength. It may be able to withstand extreme cold or intense heat because of this. In the dark, it becomes even more perilous. ”

The Stygian Zinogre (Fulgurocaniops dominus) is a fictional species of saurischian wyvern introduced in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
The name Zinogre is simply a transliteration of the original Japanese name, ジンオウガ (Jin'ōga). The first half of the Japanese name could either be jin (kanji: 神 / kana: ジン), meaning "deity" (which hints its mythological inspiration), or jin (kanji: 迅 / kana: ジン), meaning "quick". The second half could be the Japanese transliteration of ogre, since Zinogre is heavily built and possesses brute strength. In Maori was called "Tīenōka" / "迅鬼", Hawaiian is "Kīe-ōʻa", and in Korean was "진오우거." This name was coined by American Protestant missionaries in Nihon after World War 2.
The word 'Stygian' was chosen for the subspecies since it was designed with hellhounds in mind.
Stygian Zinogre is mutated Zinogre sporting color schemes of grey, white, and red, dull yellowish fur-like pycnofibers, grey hard plating on its limbs, and is typically larger than normal individuals.
Zinogre's thunder-like attacks are different in coloring from the ordinary Zinogre; this crimson red/black lightning deals Chaos-Element damage. It is able to imbue its attacks with Dragon Element due to its absorption of multiple bugs that feed on Dragonfell berries.
These bugs are red-and-black-colored orbs that float around Stygian Zinogre; they closely resemble the Great Thunderbug from previous games. When released, these orbs can fly directly at the Hunter and explode on contact, dealing significant damage.
Zinogre's roar requires Earplugs to block.

When the Zinogre is tripped, bugs can be harvested from its back using a Bug Net.
In Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, the Capture Net must be fired from the Slinger to harvest bugs, but in Monster Hunter Rise, bugs are simply grabbed off the back like any dropped material.
Using Shock Traps on Zinogre will actually help it charge up faster. Each use adds two stages of charge to Zinogre, and in addition they are ineffective when Zinogre is already fully charged (they will explode on contact, presumably from becoming over-charged). Although Zinogre can still be captured with a Shock Trap, Pitfall Traps are a safer option.
Stygian Zinogre are powerful predators armed with deadly claws capable of crushing a Bulldrome's spine in one blow; and teeth that tear chunks of flesh off their prey. Since these Zinogre inhabit the Volcano and Tundra they come into contact with equally powerful predators such as Barioth, Gigginox, Baleful Gigginox, Zamtrios, Tidal Najarala, Kushala Daora, Deviljho, Agnaktor and its Subspecies, and Brachydios. Smaller predators like Great Baggi or Great Wroggi and their packs are too small to threaten a fully grown healthy Stygian Zinogre, as even when outnumbered the Fanged Wyvern has a considerable size and strength advantage. In the New World, they can be seen battling Rathalos, Azure Rathalos, Fulgur Anjanath, Glavenus and it's subspecies for territory without losing ground.
Unlike normal Zinogres who utilize common Thunderbugs, the Stygian Zinogre utilize a species of insects called Dracophage Bugs that feed on Dragonfell Berries, thus granting this species to use powerful dragon-element attacks. Stygian Zinogre can fire these bugs and when they find their target they explode on contact, causing massive damage to predators or hunters. The effects of the dragon element also keeps them warm in the freezing Tundra and cool in the blistering Volcano.
Interestingly it appears that Stygian Zinogre found in the Volcano are sometimes much more powerful than ones found within the Tundra due to the higher populations of Dracophage bugs. But during some seasons their strength is no different than their Tundra counterparts. The species has also over time lost their natural thunder element resistance due to switching from Thunderbugs to Dracophage Bugs, and are thus more susceptible to shock traps. Aside from their elemental prowess, Stygian Zinogre are also very physically strong, quite fast and surprisingly agile, literally throwing their impressive bulk around in long chains of attacks from all directions surrounding their enemies. Despite their elemental focus, they will not lose against other apex-level monsters in physical contests.
The Stygian Zinogre has to be highly aggressive with other predators for food and territory. Zinogre and Stygian Zinogre, while still easily agitated, aren't as aggressive as most monsters. They will still fight any intruders in their territory, but their imposing presence is often enough to drive smaller creatures away or make them hungry.
While the common Zinogre inhabits forested areas such as the Misty Peaks and Deserted Island, the Stygian Zinogre inhabits the below-freezing Tundra, Frozen Seaway, and Hoarfrost Reach, along with the scorching Volcano, Volcanic Hollow, and Elder's Recess.

Stygian Zinogre ranked 11th place in the Top Monster competition during Monster Hunter's 20th Anniversary.
This is the highest rating for a Subspecies.
Since male Zinogre tend to be solitary hunters, it is likely that every Zinogre encountered in the game is male.
