So mindfulness therapy which is what I offer online via Skype is a very effective way of changing those emotional habits that create anxiety and depression. We do this by breaking free from the blind reactive habit of becoming identified and reactive. This is the central problem that most people face. Thoughts for example, are common triggers that trigger anxiety and what happens is that the instant that the thought arises it instantly triggers the underlying anxiety. 


So we work on breaking this compulsive reactive habit so that even if the thought arises you don't have to react with anxiety or depression or any other emotional reaction. We learn to essentially isolate the triggers from the emotional reactions. 


This is very, very important indeed for changing anxiety and depression. You have to stop feeding the underlying emotion through reactivity. When you stop feeding it then the emotion will begin a process of what is called "auto-resolution." It will start to change itself if you don't feed it. The analogy here is like a fire. If you stop feeding a fire with fuel then that fire will automatically begin to burn itself out and eventually it will completely burn itself out so there is no fire left at all. 


The same principle applies to our emotions. If we stop feeding them through reactivity, through identification, through aversion and through avoidance, if we stop feeding them through these forms of reactivity, then those emotions will also burn themselves out. They will learn to change and resolve themselves. This is a very well demonstrated fact.

It's very effective and it is just as effective as talking in-person if you're interested in changing emotional habits like anxiety or depression or OCD or addiction or social anxiety disorder. Welcome. My name is Peter Strong. I'm a professional psychotherapist based in Boulder Colorado, but I offer Skype counseling therapy worldwide to anyone who is interested in online mindfulness therapy for the treatment of anxiety and depression without the use of antidepressant medications or anti-anxiety medications. 


There are better alternatives available than medications for treating anxiety and depression. Medications have the place but it's important to understand that they only control symptoms; they don't address the underlying cause of your anxiety and depression. 


So the underlying cause that we need to control and change is basically psychological reactive habits that feed the emotional state of anxiety or depression. Learning how to control these habits is absolutely central and that's the primary focus of mindfulness therapy. 


So we look at the structure of our emotions. We look at the structure primarily rather than the narrative or the stories we tell ourselves. That's part of the structure but it's not the cause of our anxiety or depression. And this is one of the themes of mindfulness therapy, as I teach it, is that our emotions precede thoughts, beliefs and narratives. Not the other way around. 


So thoughts do not cause anxiety or depression but they will certainly feed anxiety or depression that's already there. But it is the case that anxiety or depression will cause anxiety-based thoughts or depression based thoughts. So the emotion precedes the cognitive structures of thoughts, beliefs, narratives and even memories too. 


So the anxiety and depression need to be addressed directly not by trying to change the narrative or change the belief structure or change the thoughts themselves because they are simply the product of the emotion. 


So we work with the emotion directly whether that's anxiety or depression or panic attacks or the compulsive emotions behind OCD or intrusive thoughts or the compulsive impulses behind an addiction. 


Whatever the emotion is that's what we must address. And we do that in mindfulness therapy by learning how to meditate on our emotions. This is the primary characteristic of mindfulness therapy or mindfulness meditation therapy as I used to call it several years ago. 


Basically, we learn how to meditate on our emotions and this is the first way that we can break out of that reactive habit of feeding the emotions through reactive thinking and reactive behaviors. But there's more to changing an emotion than just freeing ourselves from the reactive habits that feeds the emotion. 


We have to change the emotion directly and the primary way we do that is by looking at the imagery of the emotion. We look at changing the imagery of anxiety or the imagery of depression.
