So the whole basis of the mindfulness therapy approach that I offer via Skype is about teaching you how to change the relationship that you have with your anxiety or depression. The relationship is the central most important thing that determines whether you become a victim of anxiety or depression or whether you can facilitate the healing of anxiety or depression. 


The real problem is what we call reactive identification whereby we simply become consumed by our emotions. We contract into the emotion and we take on the identity of the emotion. 


So when you say, "I am afraid" you literally become the fear. In the mindfulness training that I offer we learn to break this habit, the primary cause of your anxiety. Instead, we learn to see the fear or the depression or the anxiety as an object in the mind. 


It is essential you break the habit of becoming identified with it. When you do that you stop feeding the emotion, you stop fueling it through reactive thinking and other forms that reactivity that we also become identified with. It is very, very important that you learn to establish a relationship that is non-reactive with your emotions. 


This creates the right internal conditions whereby the emotions begin to heal and change themselves, and anxiety will change if you stop identifying with it and stop reacting to it. It takes in training but its really quite simple, and when you take this very direct approach to working with anxiety, depression you'll be quite surprised at how fast things change.

Welcome. My name is Peter Strong and I offer online therapy via Skype, Skype counseling therapy using mindfulness-based techniques to help you better manage anxiety and depression. 


So mindfulness-based therapy is extremely effective because it teaches you practical methods that you can employ yourself between sessions and develop the necessary skills to manage difficult emotions like anxiety and depression or addiction. 


Mindfulness Therapy is about giving you practical tools. One of the most practical tools that we will explore during our sessions together is mindfulness meditation. So I teach mindfulness meditation, but specifically for the purpose of healing emotional suffering. 


So during this kind of mindfulness meditation you learn how to meditate on your emotions. That means being able to develop a conscious and non-reactive relationship with your emotions, with your anxiety, with your depression, with your fear, with your obsession, whatever it might be. The most important thing you can do is learn to a develop conscious and non-reactive relationship with these emotions. 


So during mindfulness training we learn how to sit with our emotions, meditate on them and develop non-reactive conscious awareness. We call this equanimity and it's a very powerful skill. It takes training, but if you train deliberately and you know what you're doing and you have some good guidance you can very quickly get to a place where you can observe your emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them. 


The second part of our mindfulness work is about healing those emotions, healing the underlying emotional pain, whether it is fear or depression or guilt or anger or stress, whatever it might be. We work to heal that, and that is the response of compassion, which is a very important part of mindfulness therapy and mindfulness training. It Is not sufficient to just see emotional suffering. We must respond to it in a way that promotes its healing. This is the definition of compassion. 


So building this alliance between True Self and Little Self is a major healing factor in itself. But we can also help the emotion heal by interacting with it with compassion. And this often involves working with the imagery of the emotion. 


So all emotions like anxiety and depression or compulsion or stress or guilt, whatever it might be has certain specific internal psychological imagery that supports that emotion, and that imagery is vital. It's what actually causes the emotion. It Is what gets triggered in the mind that then causes the emotion to take form. 


Now seeing this imagery is very, very useful because once you see the imagery, which is formed out of habit, is reactive, you can change that imagery. You can help the imagery change and this is the primary mechanism through which emotions change themselves and heal. When emotions heal they do so by changing their imagery. They become smaller, the color becomes less intense, and so on. 


So we can facilitate that. We can speed up that process. So this is all part of the compassionate response of mindfulness, is working with the emotional imagery to help the emotion heal and to let go of its emotional suffering.

I see people through Skype because I find that to be the most effective way of establishing a good line of communication. It's important that we see each other. Conventional talk therapy can be helpful, but often it does not transform the the underlying process that is the real cause of your anxiety or depression.


The same can be said for medications - prescription medications may relieve symptoms for a while, but medications are not going to transform the underlying process that causes your emotional pain.


The kind of psychotherapy that I teach online is known as Mindfulness Therapy, which can be extremely powerful for handling chronic anxiety as well as for treating depression and other psychological problems resulting from habitual reactive thinking. 


Most of my clients experience quite substantial changes after 3-4 sessions of Skype Therapy.


I am often asked if Skype therapy works, and the short answer is yes it most certainly does work for most common emotional psychological problems such as anxiety and depression. It is not recommended for conditions requiring medical treatment, of course, but this is not the usual case for most people. Good psychotherapy should be about teaching you practical skills and ways of working with difficult emotions and that can be done just as well through Skype.

This requires you learning skills and practical methods that you can practice by yourself at home - that's really my definition of good psychotherapy, it gives you the tools rather than making you dependent on a therapist.

So Skype counseling therapy using mindfulness is very effective for anxiety, in particular. It teaches you how to work with the emotions and the thoughts that cause your anxiety. And this is the most important thing. Changing the habitual reactive process that creates anxiety. 


So with mindfulness we look closely at these reactive habitual processes and we bring consciousness to them, that is mindfulness. We bring conscious awareness to these habits. And when you bring consciousness to a habit that makes it very much easier to change that habit. The real driving force behind all emotional habits is simply unawareness, the absence of consciousness. 


So we learn how to actually meditate on our emotions. We bring our emotions into the mind and we look at them like we would look at an object. We examine them and we watch for the reactive processes that support them and feed our emotions. 


When we see the reactive processes at work we simply consciously acknowledge them and break that habit of reactive identification, whereby we simply become swallowed up by reactive thinking, by negative thinking and by negative beliefs. So we learn how to see the mind without becoming controlled by it. We watch thoughts without becoming lost in those thoughts. We watch our emotional reactions without becoming lost in those emotional reactions. 


In this way we quite quickly can become free from those habits. And when you free yourself from the habits, then you free yourself from the essential underlying cause of our anxiety or depression. And that's what makes mindfulness therapy so effective, because it really gets to the underlying cause of your suffering, rather than just talking about your emotions or treating your emotional symptoms with some medications. 


So talk therapy in the usual sense of the word, isn't really getting to the root of the problem. Medications of course do nothing to change the underlying cause of your anxiety or depression. 


So it's important to understand that anxiety and depression is a habit and that habit is what we work on changing through developing a very conscious and very open and non-reactive relationship with that habit. So this approach works extremely well for anxiety. It works well for specific forms of anxiety such as OCD. It helps us break free from those reactive intrusive thoughts. It helps us overcome chronic worry. It works well with health anxiety, which has a set of specific triggers associated with health and perceived illness. 


It works very well with all kinds of fear, including phobias, and agoraphobia is particularly susceptible to Mindfulness Therapy. Many of my clients suffer from agoraphobia and that's why they seek me because I offer online therapy, which is of course very convenient if you're suffering from agoraphobia. I also see lots of people suffering that suffer from anxiety around driving. So driving phobia is another common condition that I work with using mindfulness therapy. 


It works extremely well. Most people see results quite quickly when they start taking this direct, focused approach, looking at the actual mechanism that produces your anxiety or depression.
