So mindfulness therapy which is what I offer online via Skype is a very effective way of changing those emotional habits that create anxiety and depression. We do this by breaking free from the blind reactive habit of becoming identified and reactive. This is the central problem that most people face. Thoughts for example, are common triggers that trigger anxiety and what happens is that the instant that the thought arises it instantly triggers the underlying anxiety. 


So we work on breaking this compulsive reactive habit so that even if the thought arises you don't have to react with anxiety or depression or any other emotional reaction. We learn to essentially isolate the triggers from the emotional reactions. 


This is very, very important indeed for changing anxiety and depression. You have to stop feeding the underlying emotion through reactivity. When you stop feeding it then the emotion will begin a process of what is called "auto-resolution." It will start to change itself if you don't feed it. The analogy here is like a fire. If you stop feeding a fire with fuel then that fire will automatically begin to burn itself out and eventually it will completely burn itself out so there is no fire left at all. 


The same principle applies to our emotions. If we stop feeding them through reactivity, through identification, through aversion and through avoidance, if we stop feeding them through these forms of reactivity, then those emotions will also burn themselves out. They will learn to change and resolve themselves. This is a very well demonstrated fact.

We can see thoughts without becoming lost in those thoughts. This requires training that will not happen automatically but it will happen if we make the choice to train ourselves to remain independent in relationship to our thoughts. This prevents them growing, essentially, it prevents the emotions feeding in the same way that that fire fed when we put more fuel onto it. If we stop feeding our anxiety or depression with reactive thinking then those emotions will begin to subside and burn themselves out. And in then this way we are actually creating a new pathway in the brain through which those emotions gradually lose strength and resolve themselves. 


So reactivity simply strengthens the emotions, but non-reactivity activity weakens the emotions and allows them to dissipate and diffuse.

As I say, Mindfulness Therapy is by far the best approach available for working with anxiety and depression, and I have also had very good success with addictions and also with the treatment of OCD.


This is because all of these emotional problems are based on chronic underlying psychological emotional habits that tend to operate out of awareness like any habit, and they tend to get triggered and then we become captured by that habit. So, for example, anxiety is primarily a habit. Anxiety can be triggered by a thought or a memory or something that someone says to you, or other event. It triggers an internal psychological habit that then creates the emotion.


Working with these habits is the main focus of Mindfulness Therapy. You will learn very practical and very focused methods of working with your emotions using mindfulness during the therapy sessions and also you will be able to practice these methods by yourself between the therapy sessions.


Most people using this very focused approach will see a significant reduction in anxiety or depression within 3-4 sessions. We spend much more time working on changing that underlying habit than simply talking about your family history or the reasons that may have caused you to become anxious or depressed in the first place. The history of your emotional suffering is useful, of course, but it is not going to change that emotional habit. You have to focus on that directly, which is what we do in Mindfulness Therapy.
