So the way to break free from those patterns of emotional reactivity that cause our anxiety and that fuel our obsessions is to learn how to form a mindfulness-based relationship with them and to train with those those thoughts and the anxiety. We train ourself to sit with them without becoming reactive.


When you can sit with your emotions and thoughts without allowing them to proliferating further, then you are taking away the fuel source that feeds the underlying anxiety that fuels those intrusive thoughts. So learning to sit with your emotions and thoughts is the heart of the Mindfulness Meditation Therapy approach that I teach for overcoming OCD.


This approach is very effective and it's very effective because it's very direct. It is about working directly with your emotions. Just talking about your emotions is seldom enough to change the underlying reactivity that feeds your anxiety. You have to change your relationship to that reactivity directly so that you do not become blindly identified with it, blindly caught up in the reactive thinking or in the emotion itself.


The more you can develop this quality of objective consciousness where you can maintain your identity as your True Self, the Observer, looking at your emotions and thoughts as objects in the mind the freer you become and the faster the recovery.


With training you see the thoughts and the anxiety as simply objects in the mind that you can observe and respond to with compassion. That's the power of this teaching - it frees you, it liberates you from emotional suffering by allowing you to strengthen your perspective as your True Self.


Connection with that True Self is exactly what the anxiety needs in order to heal itself. So your True Self is fearless by nature because it is non-reactive.


The anxiety is completely fear-based. In order to resolve fear, it needs to come into contact with that which is fearless and that is your True Self. So this is what we cultivate by meditating on our thoughts and the emotions that fuel those thoughts, which is generally fear.

Mindfulness Therapy is very good for treating all forms of anxiety disorders because it teaches you how to work with your thoughts in a very direct and practical way, and that is essential in working with OCD.


We have to basically change the way that we relate to our thoughts. Some people teach that we have to overcome irrational thoughts. I do not agree with that. Whether the thoughts are rational or irrational is of no particular importance. What matters is the emotional charge of those thoughts and the nature of your relationship to them.


So typically when we experience an obsessive thought or an intrusive thought we become immediately identified with that. This is called reactive identification, and then we tend to react even further to intrusive thoughts by creating more thoughts that feed the first intrusive thought, and that is called reactive proliferation of thoughts.


So this is what typically happens out of habit for most people with OCD. But with mindfulness training and the methods that I will teach you during our online therapy sessions, you will begin to be able to break free from the compulsive aspects of those intrusive thoughts.


You do not require medication to treat OCD. Medication simply masks the intensity of the emotion, but it doesn't do anything to change the underlying process that is causing those intrusive-obsessive thoughts to arise in the mind, and that's what we address with Mindfulness Therapy.


So the first step is learning to be with your intrusive thoughts without becoming overwhelmed by them. And then when you establish this relationship with them, then you can begin to change the emotional component of those intrusive obsessive thoughts, and I will explain in great detail how to do this.

The approach that I use is called Mindfulness Therapy, which is extremely good at helping you break free from repetitive intrusive thoughts and memories and images.


The most important thing that we must get right, right from the beginning, is to break the habit of fear reaction to the intrusive thoughts. Many people are very distressed by intrusive thoughts and it's quite natural to react with fear and also with hatred for these thoughts.


You just want them to go away at any cost. But the trouble is, that reactions of fear and hatred end up feeding those thoughts. It makes them more intense and that will cause them to become even more intrusive.


From experience in the field of mindfulness psychology, that is becoming quite popular these days, it's quite clear that the winning strategy is actually to do the exact opposite of reacting with fear or aversion. And that is to develop a friendly and compassionate relationship with those intrusive thoughts and troublesome images.


This may seem very counter-intuitive, but it is not. The way it works is that by learning how to form a non-reactive relationship with those thoughts you basically break the habit that feeds the intrusive thoughts.


When you break a habit that feeds them, then they begin to subside and lose strengths quite naturally like any thought would do. Any thought that arises in the mind has a strength to it when it first arises, an emotional charge that keeps it in the mind, but that emotional charge quickly dissipates and for most of the time for most kinds of thoughts the thoughts simply disappear when that emotional charge has dissipated.


But with intrusive thoughts and intrusive images and memories that emotional charge does not dissipate. The main reason why it doesn't dissipate is because you inadvertently continue feeding that emotional charge through your reactivity to the thoughts.


Now when you to develop friendliness or compassion, which is the essence of mindfulness, towards those thoughts, you basically take away this fuel source and that allows the thoughts to naturally subside and lose their emotional charge and intensity.


So that's the first very important principle. The way that we go about doing this and helping those intrusive thoughts neutralize themselves and lose their emotional charge is by, surprisingly enough, by meditating on those intrusive thoughts directly.


So you deliberately bring them into the mind but you cultivate this relationship that is not reactive to those thoughts. You have to train with the thoughts in order to break free from them.


Change the imagery of the thoughts and you can greatly reduce the intensity of those thoughts.


So it's by consciously interacting with the imagery and changing it that you can have a profound effect on decreasing the intensity of those intrusive thoughts. So this is another aspect of Mindfulness Therapy that I teach during these Skype Therapy sessions.


I will teach you how to apply mindfulness, how to meditate on your intrusive thoughts and memories. And these mindfulness-based methods are methods that you can use yourself and apply at home between sessions, which of course greatly accelerates the process of recovery.
