Conventional talk therapy can be helpful, but often it does not resolve the the underlying process that is the real cause of your anxiety or depression.


The same can be said for medications - prescription medications may relieve symptoms for a while, but medications are not going to change the underlying cause of your emotional pain.


The kind of psychotherapy that I teach online is known as Mindfulness Therapy, which can be extremely powerful for handling chronic anxiety as well as for treating depression and other psychological problems resulting from habitual reactive thinking.


Most of my clients experience quite substantial changes after 3-4 sessions of Skype Therapy.


I am often asked if Skype therapy works, and the short answer is yes it most certainly does work for most common emotional psychological problems such as anxiety and depression. It is not recommended for conditions requiring medical treatment, of course, but this is not the usual case for most people. Also, of course, it depends entirely on the style of psychotherapy that you are working with.


So Skype therapy will not work for body-centered psychotherapy and it will not work for forms of psychotherapy that involves establishing up very close relationship with the therapist, but it is perfectly adequate for the kind of psychotherapy that I teach, which is focused on teaching you more effective ways of working with difficult emotions so that you don't become overwhelmed by anxiety or depression or the impulse drives of addictions.


This requires you learning skills and practical methods that you can practice by yourself at home - that's really my definition of good psychotherapy, it gives you the tools rather than making you dependent on a therapist.

Welcome. My name is Peter Strong. I'm a professional psychotherapist based in Boulder Colorado, but I offer Skype counseling therapy worldwide to anyone who is interested in online mindfulness therapy for the treatment of anxiety and depression without the use of antidepressant medications or anti-anxiety medications.


There are better alternatives available than medications for treating anxiety and depression. Medications have the place but it's important to understand that they only control symptoms; they don't address the underlying cause of your anxiety and depression.


So the underlying cause that we need to control and change is basically psychological reactive habits that feed the emotional state of anxiety or depression. Learning how to control these habits is absolutely central and that's the primary focus of mindfulness therapy.


So we look at the structure of our emotions. We look at the structure primarily rather than the narrative or the stories we tell ourselves. That's part of the structure but it's not the cause of our anxiety or depression. And this is one of the themes of mindfulness therapy, as I teach it, is that our emotions precede thoughts, beliefs and narratives. Not the other way around.


So thoughts do not cause anxiety or depression but they will certainly feed anxiety or depression that's already there. But it is the case that anxiety or depression will cause anxiety-based thoughts or depression based thoughts. So the emotion precedes the cognitive structures of thoughts, beliefs, narratives and even memories too.


So the anxiety and depression need to be addressed directly not by trying to change the narrative or change the belief structure or change the thoughts themselves because they are simply the product of the emotion.


So we work with the emotion directly whether that's anxiety or depression or panic attacks or the compulsive emotions behind OCD or intrusive thoughts or the compulsive impulses behind an addiction.


Whatever the emotion is that's what we must address. And we do that in mindfulness therapy by learning how to meditate on our emotions. This is the primary characteristic of mindfulness therapy or mindfulness meditation therapy as I used to call it several years ago.


Basically, we learn how to meditate on our emotions and this is the first way that we can break out of that reactive habit of feeding the emotions through reactive thinking and reactive behaviors. But there's more to changing an emotion than just freeing ourselves from the reactive habits that feeds the emotion.


We have to change the emotion directly and the primary way we do that is by looking at the imagery of the emotion. We look at changing the imagery of anxiety or the imagery of depression.
