Many people do not like the 12-Step approach to addiction recovery and would prefer a different approach that focuses on changing the underlying emotions that fuel the addiction.

Also, many people are not comfortable with a group therapy approach. There is often shame around addiction and people prefer an individualized approach where they can work one-on-one with a therapist. The choice of Online Therapy for Addictions can be far less intimidating and will likely be a very good addition to your progress with addiction recovery.

Addiction Therapy Online

Addiction Counseling Online - Online Therapist for Addictions via Skype

In order to fully recover from alcohol addiction or any other addiction you will need to heal the emotions that drive the addiction. During these online therapy sessions we will focus on the two classes of emotions that need to change: the addictive compulsions and the underlying core emotions such as anxiety, depression or low self-esteem, that fuel the addictive cravings.

Welcome! My name is Peter Strong and I am a professional online therapist. I offer online counseling via Skype for help with a range of emotional problems, anxiety, depression and emotional stress, and also for addictions.

The method that I use is called Mindfulness therapy, which is particularly effective for working with the difficult and powerful emotions that underlie most addictions. During these online therapy sessions, we focus on the two kinds of emotions that dominate most addictions, and especially alcohol addiction, and that is the compulsive-craving emotions themselves, and the underlying core emotions that fuel those addictive cravings. We must address both of these kind of classes of emotions if you are to fully recover and to prevent relapse.

So, mindfulness is very good for this purpose. It allows you to essentially form a stable relationship with your emotions in which you can learn how to experience the compulsion or the underlying core emotions without becoming overwhelmed.

The biggest problem we find is this habitual tendency to identify with our emotions. When we identify with them we become entrap by those emotions and then we become reactive and more or less lose control. So, mindfulness teaches us how to maintain balance in the face of these very emotions. When you learn how to do that then you begin to gain greater freedom from the emotions themselves, and if you can prevent yourself from becoming reactive towards these emotions or becoming identified with them, then that allows the emotions to begin to begin to change, to begin to transform and heal, and this is of course necessary for the recovery from addiction.

If you would like to learn more about Mindfulness Therapy for your addiction, or for your recovery from your alcohol addiction, please contact me and we can schedule a Skype therapy session.

Online Treatment for Addiction via Skype

Welcome. My name is Peter Strong. I'm a professional psychotherapist and I offer online therapy for anxiety, depression, PTSD and also addictions. Many people like the idea of online treatment for addiction by Skype because it's more private for you. It means that you can have your sessions from home. You don't have to travel to the therapist's office and you can work in a more private and intimate way on your addiction.

The other reason that people like online therapy for work with their addiction is because often people feel a lot of shame and guilt around addiction. And it's again difficult to get the motivation to go and see a therapist or counselor in their office.

The approach that I use for treating addiction is based on helping you change the underlying psychological emotional habits that cause your addiction. Mostly I work with addiction to alcohol but there are many other forms of addiction. The one thing they all have in common is that they are based on an underlying emotional reactivity, some form of unresolved painful emotion that is not healing, basically, and that fuels the addictive process, usually as a way of escaping that emotional pain.

So during the online sessions I will be teaching you how to apply mindfulness, specifically, for working with these unresolved emotions to help you bring thei resolution, to heal those emotions. And we do this at two levels.

One of which is that we learn to work with the emotional reactivity in the form of those addictive impulses, those compulsive impulses themselves. So we have learned how to manage those. Because if you don't if you become a slave to those emotional impulses to drink or over eat, or whatever it might be, then that behavioral reactivity will reinforce that underlying core emotion that's causing the addiction in the first place.

So we have to learn to manage the impulses and the second thing we do is work on the underlying core emotion, the depression, the shame, the guilt, the stress whatever it might be. The emotional trauma, whatever it might be that's fueling the addiction.

So we do this by learning to meditate on our mind. You learn to meditate on those emotional reactions. The two types the core emotion, of course, but also the impulses, the addictive impulses.

We will deliberately bring those into the mind so that we can begin to change our relationship to them so that we break this habit of becoming a slave to those emotional habitual reactions. This is the most important thing that will promote healing.

If we stop feeding the reactivity then you allow those emotions to continue their process of healing.

So there are a variety of techniques we use, but the most important one is meditation on your emotions.

We do not meditate to escape our emotions, which is often taught, but this is something that I fundamentally disagree with. We meditate on our emotional pain, itself, in order to facilitate healing. That is what needs our attention.

So we begin to see that emotional pain very much in the same way that we might see a child in pain. We don't avoid the child's pain. We go and take care of it. We learn how to establish a conscious and friendly relationship with that child because that is what will promote its healing and we must do the same thing with our own emotions.

The main factor that you need to have is motivation. You need to be committed to changing and healing this underlying emotional reactivity. If you are committed, then you will see substantial improvements. You will be able to break the habit of your addiction. It may take several sessions to do this but that is a function of how committed you are, how well you understand how to apply mindfulness and meditation to work on your addiction and the underlying emotions, and how much you practice.

So if this is something that you're interested in pursuing and you feel ready for this work then I invite you to email me, contact me and let's schedule a session so you can see for yourself if this approach is going to work for you. It certainly has helped a great number of people over the last 10 or so years that I've been offering online mindfulness therapy.

Mindfulness-based Addiction Counseling via Skype

Welcome. My name is Peter Strong. I'm a professional psychotherapist based in Boulder, Colorado and I offer online therapy via Skype for treating anxiety and depression So, can you talk to a therapist online? Yes you can. You can talk to a therapist online for non-medical conditions such as anxiety and depression and other common emotional problems. The whole purpose of online therapy is really to help you develop skills for working with your anxiety or depression to learn how to overcome your anxiety or depression without using medications or medical treatment.

And it's very easy to get started all you need is Skype. If you want to talk to a therapist online you really should use some form of video interface like Skype so that you can see each other as well as talk to each other. The visual component makes communication very much more effective and that will improve the effectiveness of your therapy sessions. And if you're using Skype then really the online therapy becomes just as good as meeting a therapist in person. Especially when the focus is on teaching new methods and practical ways of working with your emotions.

I specialize in mindfulness therapy which is becoming very popular indeed because it's so effective for treating anxiety and depression and it also helps a great deal with other conditions like addiction recovery, and PTSD is another area that I offer online therapy for through Skype. The main the main focus in Mindfulness Therapy is teaching you how to fundamentally change the way that you relate to your mind, to your thoughts and emotions, to trauma, to beliefs, whatever it might be, but particularly to thoughts and emotions.

Many people are plagued by intrusive thoughts and excessive worry thoughts, catastrophizing, rumination etc., and this sort of reactive thinking fuels anxiety and depression. So learning to change your relationship to thoughts so that you don't become overwhelmed by the thinking mind, that you can observe thoughts but not become lost in the river of thoughts that might get triggered. That's very important indeed and that's one of the skills that I will be teaching you during the online therapy sessions.

And the second set of skills are based on helping the emotion underneath the thoughts, the emotion of anxiety or depression or fear that is fueling those thoughts. Helping it heal. Helping it resolve itself, which is largely a result of forming a very conscious friendly and non-reactive relationship with your emotions and thoughts. When you get that relationship right then you stop feeding the emotion underneath the thoughts and that basically starts to take the energy away from reactive thinking and the thoughts begin to diminish in intensity and frequency by themselves.

There are other aspects of mindfulness therapy that we use to help heal the emotions underneath our thoughts.
