Welcome! My name is Peter Strong and I offer therapy via Skype for the treatment of anxiety and depression and I also offer therapy via Skype for working with recovery from addictions, as well.


Therapy via Skype is particularly good if you are suffering from anxiety. Most of my clients suffer from some form of anxiety, whether it is Social Anxiety Disorder or Agoraphobia or Panic Attacks, which are very common.


Basically, during these online therapy sessions I will teach you very practical mindfulness-based methods of working with your emotions so that you don't become overwhelmed by them.


This is the most important first step to recovery from anxiety and depression, and addiction, as well. We have to learn how to build a friendly and non-reactive relationship with our emotions. We have to learn to sit with our emotions without becoming identified with them, without losing our freedom to those emotions that get triggered in the mind.


This is essential, because if you get identified with your emotions then what happens is that reactivity will feed the emotion and stop it from healing and resolving itself. It is just like a fire. If you react to the emotion it is just the same as piling fuel on a fire. But, if you can control your relationship with your anxiety or depression or that compulsive impulse so that you don't feed it, then the emotion will begin to lose its strength, altogether. It begins to undergo a process of resolution.


This is an interesting concept for many people. We find that the actual path to resolution of anxiety and depression is already in existence, it is already present within us. Our body and mind knows how to heal suffering. The problem is that reactivity in the form of reactive thinking or reactive behaviors or igniting further forms of emotional reactivity. The reactivity prevents that natural pathway of healing from coming into effect, and so we remain stuck in repeating patterns of reactive anxiety or depression or compulsion.


So, during the mindfulness therapy sessions that I offer via Skype, we will work on learning different ways of being with our emotions without becoming reactive. Then I will teach you how to work with your emotions through the process of compassion, natural inner friendliness, that always produces positive, beneficial results in the mind.


You learn to make friends with your anxiety or depression or compulsion. If you try to resist it, it just gets stronger, that is a form of aversion, a form of reactivity. If you try to suppress it, it will simply chase after you. You have to learn to make friends with your difficult and painful emotions if you really want them to change and heal.

When you have an unconscious reactive relationship to your emotions, then whenever you react you tend to feed those emotions. You make the anxiety worse, or the depression worse by the reactivity that you have towards those emotions. Learning to break free from this habitual reactivity is central, and when you do so you stop feeding those emotions and then those emotions are free to change and to heal and to resolve themselves.


This is one of the most remarkable discoveries of mindfulness therapy, is that if you stop reacting to your emotions they will resolve and heal themselves. The analogy here would be like a fire. If you start putting fuel on that fire then the fire will always extinguish it, it will burn itself out. It's the same principle entirely, that governs the state of emotional activation in the brain. Emotions have to be fed through reactivity. If you don't feed them they will always move towards healing and resolution.

Mindfulness Therapy is about changing things at the psychological level, it's about bringing mindfulness, which is a form of very direct conscious awareness to look closely at your anxiety or depression or emotional trauma or traumatic memories to see how they actually work. What happens in the mind?


So one of the first things that we notice when we actually look at our emotions is the whole array of reactive thinking that gets triggered by those emotions.


In Mindfulness Therapy, one of the things we understand is a little different than in conventional therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, is that we understand that thoughts do not cause emotions, but emotions rather cause those thoughts. The emotions take form in thoughts and the reactive form feeds the underlying emotion, so creating a positive feedback loop that reinforces the anxiety or depression.


Rumination does not cause depression, but rumination feeds the depression. Chronic worrying does not cause anxiety, but it feeds the underlying anxiety.


So uncovering the particular reactive thought profiles that are feeding your anxiety or depression is really very important. And that's the first thing that we look at. We look to see what those reactive thoughts are and then we start to bring the magic of mindfulness to work here, because when you develop mindfulness, what you're doing is you're changing the relationship you have with those thoughts and emotions.
