Psychotherapy via Skype & Zoom - Talk with a therapist online now

Mindfulness-based Psychotherapy is very effective because it works on changing the underlying cause of your anxiety or depression rather than just treating symptoms. The focus is on teaching you practical tools and techniques that you can apply yourself between sessions. This is why most of my clients experience significant improvements very much faster than the usual talking therapy.

Please feel free to contact me by email to find out more about Online Therapy with me.

Everyone that I have worked with really benefits from the mindfulness approach that I teach for healing emotional suffering…

”The thing that distinguishes Peter’s approach from other forms of therapy is that the results are pretty much instant, but you are still working with your emotions at a very deep level (unlike, for example, CBT) so are able to create lasting change.”

THERAPY VIA SKYPE

Mindfulness therapy via Skype and Zoom for overcoming anxiety and depression without using drugs

Online Mindfulness therapy via Skype or Zoom for overcoming anxiety and depression without using drugs.

So in mindfulness-based therapy, we work on changing these underlying habits, these psychological processes that operate unconsciously to produce emotional suffering, whether that's anxiety or depression or any other form of emotional-psychological distress.

So these are a product of a conditioned habitual reactive process. The problem is that we are not readily aware of this underlying set of habits that creates your anxiety or depression. So in Mindfulness Therapy we focus awareness on our emotions. We actually learn how to apply mindfulness meditation to explore our emotions and to look at their structure to uncover these habitual reactive processes that are going on.

Now, of course, one of the major components in that reactive habitual structure will be thoughts, will be reactive habitual thoughts. It might be chronic worrying, it might be catastrophizing, it might be rumination, but these patterns of thoughts are what actually feed the anxiety or depression.

Now it's important to understand the thoughts themselves do not cause anxiety or depression. That is s a common misconception. It's actually the other way around. Anxiety tends to produce anxiety-based thoughts and anxiety-based thinking, and the same for depression. The emotional state of depression is what produces or takes form in reactive thoughts, rumination and depression-related thoughts. So they're the product of the emotion. They give the emotion a structure and when they operate in a habitual manner they simply feed and sustain that underlying structure of the emotion.

So the first part of mindfulness therapy is really looking to see what these thoughts are, to identify them clearly. We then look at ways of changing our relationship to the thoughts. You can't simply remove the thoughts. That's another misconception; it's not as simple as that. What you can do though is change your relationship to those thoughts so that you do not just blindly identify with those thoughts. That's essential and that's what typically happens when we are under the influence of habitual thinking. The thought gets triggered and then we become the thought. We literally become consumed by the thought and the reactive thinking that will manifest when we become identified with those negative thoughts.

So the first thing is to be able to develop conscious, mindful awareness of those thoughts; to see them very clearly when they get triggered in the mind, and then learn how to stay independent from them, not identifying with them. We do this through mindfulness meditation, which means that you learn how to meditate on those emotions and on the habitual thoughts that feed the emotion.

We train with them essentially. We train in not identifying with those thoughts. It's like learning to develop balance on the edge of a river so that you don't fall into the river and get swept away. Your thoughts are very much like a river. They have a lot of energy in them and if we're not careful we fall into this river of thoughts and that basically takes us away and creates a lot of emotional suffering and simply feeds and reinforces the emotions underneath.

So holding emotions in conscious awareness is an essential part of mindfulness meditation. You deliberately find our anxiety or depression and we meditate on it, learning how to create this space around it where we maintain independence and balance.

When you bring conscious awareness to it, mindfulness, you can begin to change that habitual imagery, so you can change its color. And you explore during meditation what color feels best and what color allows that depression to decrease in intensity and what color would help it heal.

Our goal in all meditation work is one of bringing about and facilitating healing. So changing the imagery is how emotions heal, and very often they will do this by themselves over time.

Generally, online therapy is very effective indeed, especially for anxiety and non-clinical depression. It is a much better alternative than years of talk therapy or other treatment-based options because Mindfulness Therapy teaches you specifically how to change your emotional reactions.

All emotional reactions are basically habits and all habits can be changed when you bring more consciousness to them. So, when you apply mindfulness to an emotional habit like anxiety or depression it changes, and it makes it much more effective in what you do in trying to help that anxiety or depression resolve and heal.

Basically, the most important thing is to build a mindfulness-based relationship with your emotions, based on consciousness and compassion. These two qualities are what really characterize mindfulness; it's much more than just awareness. Most people are already aware of their emotional suffering, but they are not necessarily conscious of the emotional habit, the underlying process that creates their anxiety or depression.

This consists of habitual reactive thinking and habitual reactive behaviors and also habitual reactive imagery. One of the hallmarks of Mindfulness Therapy is examining the imagery of your emotions, what makes them work. And, of course, when you uncover that emotional imagery you have something very definite to work with, and when you change emotional imagery, you change the emotion.
