Voeding bevat vaak nog maar heel weinig voedingsstoffen, omdat de bodem waarop het gekweekt is, uitgeput is. Dit is te wijten aan de gangbare landbouw (monoculturen, overbeplanting, kunstmest, overbemesting, pesticiden, ploegen), waardoor de bodem uitput raakt.
