Risk factors for osteoporosis include the following:

  • Age

  • Glucocorticoid use (prednisone 7.5 mg per day for >=6 months)

  • Post-menopausal, not on hormone replacement therapy

  • Smoker

  • Low weight (< 57.8 kg or 127 #)

  • Family history osteoporosis in a first degree relative

  • Frailty (inability to rise to a stand unassisted)

  • History of solid organ transplant

  • Alcoholism

  • Gastrectomy or gastric bypass

  • Primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism

  • Inflammatory bowel disease

  • Liver disease

  • Amenorrhea due to eating disorder, exercise

  • Long-term anticonvulsant, GnRH or Depo-provera use
