Prepatellar Bursitis

Previous | Next

What is it? Inflammation and swelling of the prepatellar bursa of the knee.

How does it present? Pain and swelling seen superficial to the patella usually caused from direct trauma or repetitive injury.

Common exam findings: Localized pain and swelling over the patella. Be careful to look for signs of an infected bursa, erythema, and warmth of the skin.

Tests and Treatment: Usually resolves with avoidance of trauma, compression and icing. Protection and padding can be provided by a number of knee pads, such as those used by volleyball players or construction workers. Occasionally aspiration can be used to relieve the swelling and in chronic cases steroid injection may be considered.
