  • Poor physiologic adaptation after birth

  • Age < 12 hours old. This is a traditional relative contraindication. It allows for proper parent-infant bonding, several sets of infant vital signs, and ensuring of temperature stability

  • Severe illness

  • Prematurity (unless infant is ready for discharge and weighs at least 2500g)

  • < 1 hour postprandial. A relative contraindication. Poor penile nerve block technique will lead to severe pain, vomiting, and aspiration risk

  • Note: Lack of urination is no longer considered a contraindication, because no acceptable evidence justifies this traditional "contraindication"
