Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)

Previous | Next

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine complete four years of undergraduate education before entering osteopathic medical school. The curriculum is similar to that taught at allopathic medical school. In addition to the core medical courses, students training to become D.O.s undergo an extensive manual medicine program in OMT (osteopathic manipulative treatment). Osteopathic physicians are licensed to prescribe medications and practice in all medical specialties.

Although all osteopathic physicians have training in OMT, not all practice manual medicine. Doctors who provide OMT in their clinics are affiliated with the American Academy of Osteopathy. Continuing education in manual medicine is offered to osteopaths who can also be fellowship trained in OMT and board certified in Neuromusculskeletal Medicine.
