Final Steps

Previous | Next

At this point, you have finished the major steps of no-scalpel vasectomy. There are a few remaining steps, described here.

  • Check one final time for any significant bleeding, and cauterize or tie bleeding vessels as needed.

  • Wash the Provodine iodine off the skin.

  • Apply antibiotic ointment to the skin wound, then cover it with several sterile 4x4 gauze pads.

  • Have the patient put on an athletic support strap or tight-fitting underwear to keep the gauze pads in place and provide support for the scrotum.

  • Place the two excised sections of vas into the pathology bottle. Some physicians prefer to send the specimens to pathology, while others prefer to retain the specimens in their office in case of need for future pathological confirmation.

  • Dispose of all sharps in the appropriate container.

  • Review post-procedure care with the patient, as described in the next section.
