Sterile Preparation of the Penis

While the penile analgesia is developing (maximum effect is in about three minutes), "sterilize" the penis with an antiseptic solution like iodophor solution on swabs ("Betadine swabs").

Initially hold the penis with your non-dominant hand and gently partially retract the prepuce. Start swabbing the preputial tip with your other hand, moving in a circumferential fashion down the penis, letting go of your non-dominant hand as you approach it with the swab. See Figures 1 and 2 below.

At the base of the penis, continue swabbing in larger concentric circles to swab the pubic area and proximal scrotum. See Figure 3 below. Repeat with the second swab, but this time, do not touch the penis or any part that has been swabbed with your gloved hand. Once you have swabbed an area, do not go back and swab it again, since the swab is contaminated with germs from the recently swabbed skin, while the earlier swabbed skin has drier solution on it and is less contaminated with microbes.

Remove iodphor solution-stained gloves when finished.
