Achilles Tendonopathy

What is it: A partial tear or degeneration of the Achilles tendon.

How does it present: Patient usually have a history of a tight heel cord. Recent changes in activity or shoe wear can precipitate symptoms of pain and perhaps swelling over the Achilles tendon.

Common exam findings: On exam, often a tight heel cord is observed. Tenderness, swelling or crepitius over the Achilles tendon may be appreciated.

Tests and treatment: Musculoskeletal ultrasound or MRI can be used to visualized the tendon if necessary. Treatment may include a heel lift and stretching or more formal rehabilitation.
