Clinical Presentation

Most people with colds come to the physician with cough, rhinorrhea, and nasal congestion. Usually these symptoms appear 24 to 48 hours after the first symptoms appear. Symptoms usually peak at day three or four and resolve by day seven to ten.

Adults get two to four colds per year; pre-school children may have six to ten colds per year.

The most common culprit is the rhinovirus. Cold symptoms can also be caused by coronaviruses, influenza viruses, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza viruses, adenoviruses, and enteroviruses.
