Followup

Here you will find additional information on the best way to use pedometers. Click on the links below for information about their use in clinical practice.

Now that you have learned about pedometers, please return to the main body of the module.

Once patients have started using pedometers, they tend to lose interest in exercise if they do not receive regular feedback. Feedback can be provided through regular follow-up visits and by building on previous weekly activity levels with a gentle increase in patient exercise goals by 500-1000 steps per day. Other resources for patients include:

  • The Omron HJ720 ITC ($30 on Amazon.com, click on image below) comes with a CD-ROM that lets patients download their steps to their home computer. Software allows patients to track their steps, review progress, and create new goals.

  • Several websites such as walkingspree.com, sportbrain.com or fitbug.com will track patient progress for a fee. (Note: these links take you out of the University of Michigan Education Modules site and are not part of the education curriculum.)
