Introduction

This unit is a part of the Integrative Medicine Approach to Disease module and will be incorporated into your outpatient curriculum. This unit will highlight non-pharmacologic methods of primary prevention and treatment of insulin resistance and diabetes type 2. Discussion will focus on both conventional and alternative approaches, many of which can be combined to provide optimal care for your patients. This module came about after curriculum discussions with current and former residents who had many interested patients but lacked a resource to advise them.

As an overview, the unit will provide you with a background understanding of possible therapies. It may later be useful as a reference when seeing patients interested in an integrative approach. Please feel free to use the navigation on the left to navigate to areas of interest.

This review will address specific lifestyle concerns, including nutrition and physical activity, as well as botanicals and supplements that have an evidence base in the care of those with this condition. Information on mental and spiritual health with a focus on helpful mind-body techniques is also included. For a review of the standard of care for treatment, please review the University of Michigan's Clinical Care Guidelines Website.

This case is a typical presentation:

JL is a 52-year-old woman who was diagnosed with diabetes two years ago. She has an extensive family history of diabetes and has seen a number of relatives die from complications of the disease. She has struggled with weight for a number of years and can’t find time to exercise. She works full time and has three teenagers at home. She is hesitant to take medications and is worried about side effects. Her cousin has recommended that she take supplements that she heard will cure diabetes without medication. She comes to see you because she is worried about her health and wants to know where to start.

This module is also for U-M Department of Family Medicine Residents on the MSS rotation.
