During the 1950s, '60s, '70s, and '80s, menopause was considered a "diseased" state that could be easily and effectively medicated. Both physicians and pharmaceutical companies pushed large numbers of women to use HRT.

Today, thinking within the medical community has shifted. Many physicians do not consider menopause as a disease, but rather as a natural part of the aging process. This distinction has been useful in uncovering treatments that are both non-invasive and effective.
