Strain-Counterstrain

Previous | Next

In response to rapid lengthening of a muscle, the gamma efferent system is activated in order to prevent muscle and myofascial strain. This reflexive action results in a palpable tender point of myofascial somatic dysfunction.

Strain-Counterstrain uses positioning to treat the resulting abnormal muscle tone. Once a tender point is identified, the body is placed in a specific position of comfort in which no tenderness or tissue abnormality is noted at the location. This position is held 90 seconds (or 120 seconds with rib tender points) or until a release of tension is appreciated.
