Treatments for Rhinorrhea

How about for a stuffy and runny nose?

Antihistamines: Perhaps a slight clinical benefit. Benefit is offset by risks and adverse events, especially in first generation antihistamines, so they are not recommended for children. They might be used cautiously by adults.

Decongestants (oral or nasal): May be used for a few days, are likely to be of modest benefit for adults. Reports of toxic affects in children should limit their use in that group.

Antihistamine/decongestant combinations: Small benefits have been seen in adults and adolescents, but not in children.

Intranasal ipratropium: You could prescribe Atrovent. One study shows its benefit. It is approved for children over six years of age.

If your patient asks for antibiotics: Take a look at the antibiotics section.
