Calculate Amount of Lidocaine

Previous | Next

Remember:

  • There are 10mg of lidocaine in each mL of 1% concentration.

  • The maximum safe dose of lidocaine in pediatrics is somewhere between 3.3mg/kg and 4.5mg/kg. To be safe, use the lower range as the maximum dose. For example, a 3kg infant (6lbs. 9.6oz.) can receive 9.9mg or 1mL of 1% lidocaine safely (3kg x 3.3mg/kg max dose = 9.9mg) 9.9mg is very close to 10mg = 1 mL.

  • Follow this general rule for calculating the proper amount of lidocaine: Infants > 3kg get 1mL of 1% lidocaine infants 2.5 - 3kg get 0.8 mL of 1% lidocaine.
