The one intervention that has consistently shown benefit in clinical trials is lifestyle changes (Umland), and these take several different forms, starting with smoking cessation which has been shown to significantly decrease menopausal symptoms as well as significantly delay the onset of menopause (Midgette).

Interestingly, even when symptoms themselves do not improve based on these interventions, quality of life scores do tend to improve, likely showing that the feeling of control over symptoms can be as important as the severity of those symptoms.

The next several sections offer suggestions for lifestyle adaptations that can be helpful for patients.
