Calcitonin

Also known as Miacalcin.

Calcitonin is a polypeptide hormone which inhibits bone resorption through action on osteoclasts. There is evidence from randomized controlled trials that it increases BMD in osteoporosis and reduces vertebral fracture risk. There is inadequate data regarding other fractures. Calcitonin is well tolerated and seems to be effective in reducing pain from vertebral compression fractures.

Calcitonin (Miacalcin): 200 IU intranasal (alternating nostrils) daily or 100 IU, SQ/IM qod
