Treating a Cough

Over the counter remedies for cough include:

Dextromethorphan: A meta-analysis shows 12 to 17% improvement in cough symptoms. Could be a treatment option. Be aware that central acting cough suppressants, such as dextromethorphan, are not recommended by the American College of Chest Physicians.

Expectorant - Guaifenesin: Two studies available, one shows a benefit, one does not.

Antihistamines: Three studies show no benefit.

Antihistamine/decongestant combos: Two studies, one shows a benefit but with unfavorable side effects; the other shows no benefit.

If your patient asks for codeine: See the codeine/hydrocodone section for more information.

Bottom line: Maybe use dextromethorphan in adults; but none of the above are recommended for children.
