Triceps Tendinopathy

Previous | Next

What is it: Triceps tendinopathy is an overuse, degenerative injury of the triceps tendon.

How does it present: The patient may present with pain in the posterior elbow, especially worsened by tasks that require resisted elbow extension.

Common exam findings: On exam, you may find that the triceps tendon is tender to palpate on the posterior elbow. Resisting extension of the elbow may increase pain.

Tests and treatment: No specific tests are required for diagnosis. If further imaging of the muscle or tendon is indicated, ultrasound or magnetic resonance imagine (MRI) may be indicated. Treatment is generally conservative with modification of activity, resting, and icing. Physical therapy may be helpful.
