Contraindications and Safety

Massage is generally thought of as safe when practiced by a trained individual. There are, however, general conditions that may be inappropriate. Most therapists will not give massage over broken skin or bones, areas of infection, or other severe injury. Those patients on warfarin anticoagulation are recommended to avoid deep tissue work, as should those with bleeding disorders. Pregnant women should seek care only from someone trained in pregnancy massage. Oncologists may recommend their patients against massage near a tumor site.

Less severe side effects may include soreness or stiffness in the area treated.
