How Much Protein?

Previous | Next

Protein is an energy source that contains 4 kcal per gram. Eating too much protein can lead to excessive calorie intake. Inadequate protein intake can lead to problems such as muscle wasting, compromised immunity, poor wound healing, edema, and in severe cases, death. We need a minimum of 20 grams of protein per day just to replace losses. In America, protein deficiency is typically only seen in the elderly and chronically ill. The Recommended Daily Allowance is 0.8 grams of good quality protein per kilogram of body weight per day, or an average of 46 grams/day for women and 56 grams/day for men (3).
