Pes Anserine Bursitis

Previous | Next

What is it? An irritation of the pes anserine bursa at its location just inferior and medial to the anterior knee. The pes anserinus is the area of insertion on the tibia of the sartorius, gracilis, and semitendonosis tendons.

How does it present? Localized tenderness or swelling over the affected area. Usually brought on by direct trauma or overuse, in this case of the medial hamstring muscle in swimmers, cyclists or runners.

Common exam findings: Tenderness to palpation of the site of the pes anserine bursa, sometimes swelling can be visualized.

Tests and treatment: Treatment is usually conservative with icing, stretching (particularly hamstring) and more formal rehabilitation if needed. Corticosteroid injections can be considered.
