Retrocalcaneal Bursitis

What is it: This is an inflammation of the retrocalcaneal bursa, which is just anterior to the Achilles tendon near its insertion.

How does it present: Patients may complain of posterior heel pain that increases with activity.

Common exam findings: The exam may reveal tenderness and swelling of the bursa located just anterior to the Achilles tendon near its insertion.

Tests and treatment: X-rays are not generally indicated. Treatment is generally conservative with stretching and rehabilitation similar to that for Achilles tendonopathy.
