Teriparatide

Previous | Next

Teriparatide (Forteo) is a synthetic form of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Intermittent SQ administration is associated with an increase in bone formation over bone resorption. It is indicated for men and women with osteoporosis at "high risk for fracture" and costs roughly $900 per month. There is also a theoretical risk of osteosarcoma (seen in rats), so use in persons at increased risk (Paget's, prior bone irradiation) should probably be avoided.

Teraparatide (Forteo): 20 mcg SQ, daily, for up to two years
