Flax

  • Contain a different class of phytoestrogens known as lignans

  • May have small, positive effect on menopausal symptoms

    • 1 g of either extract or meal showed decrease in vasomotor symptoms in small RCT (Colli 2012)

  • Offer an exceptionally good source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids

  • Should be consumed at a rate of one to two tablespoons per day (recommended dose)

  • Are best prepared by soaking overnight and consuming in gelatinous form, or by grinding up and sprinkling on yogurt, applesauce, or other foods

  • Will stay fresh in the refrigerator or freezer for several weeks after being ground up but quickly becomes rancid at room temperature

  • There are no concerns for increased risk of breast cancer with the use of flax
