Omega-3 Fats

Previous | Next

Omega-3 fatty acids contain their first double bond at the third carbon in the molecule. These fatty acids cannot be made by our bodies and therefore must be obtained from sources such as salmon, sardines, walnuts, canola oil, and flaxseed. Our bodies use these not only for their anti-inflammatory properties but also for brain growth and development. The American Heart Association recommends one to three grams per day to protect against CAD. (Click here to view sources and serving sizes on the U-M Healing Food Pyramid.)

Warning!

It is important to keep in mind that omega-3 fatty acid supplements are also blood thinners, so be cautious when supplementing patients who are taking anticoagulants.
