Greater Trochanteric Bursitis

Previous | Next

What is it: Inflammation of the greater trochanteric bursa.

How does it present: Patients usually present with lateral hip pain that may radiate towards their knee. It is often worse when there is pressure over the lateral hip, such as lying on the affected side and when getting up from a seated position.

Common exam findings: With the patient in the lateral decubitus position, palpate for pain over the greater trochanter.

Tests and treatment: Radiographs are not routinely needed. Treatment is often conservative, and persistent cases may benefit from a corticosteroid injection.
