Fenugreek, or trigonella foenum-graecum, is an antioxidant and a significant source of dietary fiber. When added to sulfonylureas, fenugreek extract tid for 12 weeks reduced all glucose monitoring parameters compared to placebo (1).

A common dose ranges from 10 to 100 grams divided twice daily. You can start low and increase based on results. Fenugreek is considered safe, but it can interfere with medication absorption and should be taken separately. It has occasionally been noted to cause hypokalemia. Monitoring may be helpful in those predisposed to low potassium. It can also cause some gastrointestinal distress.
