There are many studies to support trying nutritional interventions in patients with depression, and several individual nutrients seem to play an important role in maintaining mood.

Several general dietary changes may be helpful with patients with depression. Studies have shown that high levels of both refined sugars and caffeine can be associated with depression (Westover). Given this information, a trial of fasting from these substances may be warranted, followed by a period of rechallenging (Rakel) (The link leads to the "Elimination Diets" chapter in David Rakel's Integrative Medicine textbook. The source is outside the U-M curriculum and you may need a level 1 password to access it).

Patients may also benefit from information on a low-glycemic index diet which helps them avoid carbohydrates that are metabolized too quickly by the body. A trial without alcohol is usually warranted as well.
